on the one  hand I am almost certainly going to be unemployed 

on the other we made really huge gains 

like Tory majority what will target teachers first, then nurses, and obviously people on social assistance and there will be a body count 

but the ndp had no chance against Ford. No one did. Now they’re official opposition rather than also-ran. The  candidate I’ve been busting ass for won in a landslide. I’m proud of her. I went from mildly disliking. Horwath to respecting her. I got hella drunk with the guy who is likely to be the next school trustee for my riding and in the space of 15 minutes he said about a dozen things that I really agreed with.

so it’s really hard to reconcile local victory with sweeping despair 

i just don’t get how so many people in my province can be so blatantly evil. On the plus side a lot of the mpps are under investigation and I don’t think you can be mpp if you’re convicted of a crime so maybe it won’t be as bad as I think.

Eh, I'm not hopeful. I just own a house right now, so when I'm unemployed, I can sell it and buy a really sweet monster truck that I can outfit with a shitload of guns and a water-purification device of some sort.

I think it's actually Ontario that's contagious. Ford I was the precursor to Trump and the reason I knew Cheeto Benito would win.

Reactionaries are still mad that reality is continuing to refuse to conform to their fantasies, and are lashing out because of it. It seems to be an epidemic. I am not sure that "waiting for all the old bigoted white reactionaries to die out" is an option anymore, because there is a new crop of assholes for whom white (male) resentment is practically a religion. All we can do is protest and vote.

Waiting for the old bigots to die is definitely not a strategy. Yes, the Boomer generation is the most right-wing, but the combination of apathy and extreme right sentiment I see amongst my kids is worrisome.

Somewhere, there has been a failure to adjust to a new paradigm. I guess the reality TVization, or the memefication, of politics. The right gets it, the left doesn't.
