Skeleton War 2018 cake

I'm no Christine McConnell, but this year's skull cake is a definite improvement over last year's! Among other things, I learned how to take a shaped cake out of the baking pan in one piece. And how to paint fondant.



Before you ask, there's a Dollarama tray ($4 and worth every penny) underneath the cake, and the teeth are from the image on it, not an actual part of the cake. The eyeballs, however, are edible.




Here's the cake itself. Moist and delicious! I use my go-to vegan cake recipe that I use for everything now.


Crumb coating. I need me a better palette knife but oh well.


The eyeballs just on their own, because I'm very proud of them.

I mean, I am pretty useless in general but I made some damn realistic eyeballs and you can eat them.

I think fondant might end up being my medium. It has the advantage that I don't need to find a place to hang it.

That is a horrifyingly good skull-cake. I am currently baking cookies of no particular design.

I lucked out with that. I needed a new skull platter because the school stole mine and I forgot to steal it back, and it turned out that they had the perfect one.

I love the tray. I wish I'd gotten a picture of it before I put a cake on it, because it is the most stupid, most metal thing ever and it is definitely going to be used at every party I throw from now on. I am not letting the school steal this one. It was a whole $4.
