Mar. 2nd, 2005 06:20 pmI am too sick to do anything. As in, I can't sit in bed and read or knit. How utterly wretched. I think this is an emergency situation that requires ice cream and rental of stupid videos.
Let's hope I can make it across the street.
Ow.

Date: 2005-03-03 10:33 pm (UTC)Well, then I'm glad I sent you Native Land along with 1776. Well, Native Land is actually more propaganda than documentary. As I explain on the enclosed Post-it note, its leftist American patriotism is explained by the fact that it made while the US & USSR were allies and it was intended to turn the tables on red-baiters. It didn't work: Many of the people who worked on it were later black-listed in the 1950s. It's a fascinating artifact. At 88 minutes, it seems interminably long to most people who aren't into New Deal era documentary / art films, but I figured you would be one of the few who would appreciate it. It's fun hearing Paul Robeson say, "We built FREEDOM into the timbers of our homes," and catch yourself starting to correct him before you remember, Oh yeah, he's Paul Robeson: he knows.
Of course, in 1776 you get to hear the vanguard of the American Revolution sing. I re-watched it last night and found that it is easier to supply a homoerotic subtext than I remembered ("Franklin! Where were you last night when I needed you?"). Again, I have some historical problems with it. They quasi-accurately show John & Abigail Adam’s egalitarian relationship without mentioning her famous "remember the ladies" letter. What the site neglects to emphasize is that Abigail was genuinely shocked by John’s response because he had always valued her opinion before. They regularly discussed his legal cases and political work, and yet in the musical John says, "I never asked you for advice before …" which is simply bullshit. Events are also compressed or otherwise tweaked for story-telling conveniences but it is also surprisingly accurate in other areas. It’s also very, very silly. Enjoy.
I think I may have already said all this elsewhere. If so, apologies.
