Reading Wednesday
Oct. 13th, 2021 04:48 pmJust finished: Out of the Ruins, edited by Preston Grassman. As I mentioned last time, this is a much-needed collection of short stories about rebuilding after various sorts of apocalypses. Like any anthology, it's hit and miss in terms of quality, but more hits than misses, with a talented roster of sci-fi and fantasy authors. My favourite was Nick Mamatas' "The Man You Flee at Parties," which is a weird, inventive tale about future economies (full disclosure, he's a friend of mine, but he's a friend I met because he writes weird, inventive things).
Currently reading: Blood Sports by Eden Robinson. I thought I'd read everything she wrote but apparently not. This is an older book about a young couple who fall afoul of a sociopathic drug dealer in Vancouver's Downtown East Side. I saw it described as BC noir, and that fits—it's gritty, disjointed, and violent. I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it as such, in that there is a lot more graphic torture than I expected, but it's very well-written.

Date: 2021-10-16 01:19 pm (UTC)I know people who read way more than I do! My goal is 50 books a year (excluding comics, poetry, and other short things); I think last year I hit about 70. This year is slower because I'm also beta-reading a lot.
But honestly it's because I set aside dedicated time every night to read. That's my only secret. I used to commute two hours a day and then I read a lot more, but I don't wish for that back.
