Currently reading: Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich. This is a very depressing book. It's the most Russian thing I've read in a long time. It's just people's accounts of the time that they thought something good would happen, and then it didn't, or it got worse, and now they strongly believe that nothing good will ever happen again. Which, given Russian history, is not a particularly wild assumption. I would recommend it, especially if you're of my generation or older and actually remember what the early 90s were like.
Hunting By Stars by Cherie Dimaline. I'm almost done this one. It's much less focussed than I remember Marrow Thieves being, which I think it needs to be. It's a story of kinship and community and betrayal, which necessitates multi-POVs and somewhat of a disconnect in plot lines, which are now converging. The main group is trying to survive, Rose, Frenchie's girlfriend, has gone off looking for him with Derrick, who has a massive crush on her, and Frenchie and his long-lost brother have been recruited as Agents to lure Indigenous survivors into the schools. I'm in suspense.
