Alberta voters should have a new tax, with the revenues going directly to compensate victims of the wildfires in Nova Scotia. The amount of tax will be determined by the amount of physical damage + pain and suffering. Let's see how the UCP's promises of low taxes (at the cost of human rights and the planet) stack up once externalities are factored in.

Also, before you say it, I know that Notley isn't much better on bootlicking the oil and gas sector. But Smith is smugger about it and a literal fascist, so fuck her and everyone who voted for her.

Yeah, not thrilled with the Alberta outcome either.

Horrific news from there, Texas, Florida, Turkiye, and a bunch of other places this past week...

Looks like most Albertans did not GAF about the increased rate of Alberta wildfires even.

The provincial version of the Sun "newspaper" noted that every official responsible for provincial health response during the pandemic lost their seat to the NDP rival. Unsure if that can be reduced to either good or bad, as there would be grievances from both the left and right with how Kenney handled things.

But Notley is actually much better on the oil and gas sector. She brought in tons of regulation, some of which the sector was actually asking for. Many are willing to take action on climate change if there is a fair playing field established where everyone is regulated. Some of these oil companies have investors leaving because Alberta is not establishing a regulatory framework that makes them play nice. She was also looking long term for setting up for a green transition. Smith is not looking at this whatsoever. Jason Kenney before her used public workers' pension fund money to recklessly invest in Alberta oil and gas. It's easy for lefties/greens outside the province to shit on Notley because she's not stopping tar sands now but she's as good as is realistically possible. The other socialist option is to nationalize the industry and make the taxpayers shoulder all the costs of transition... That's what Trudeau has done with TMX and that's a nightmare.

Sorry for the rant. :)

That usually is not a good sign. When industry, especially oil and gas, want regulation they are the winners.

In my experience they say this but they don't believe it. They lie to themselves. They think they are vital.

As a leftie/green outside the country, are they still approving tar sands developments? I've been out of the loop for a while now.

That's what Trudeau has done with TMX and that's a nightmare.

Trans Mountain Expansion is going ahead?

If I was still meeting Trudeau next month (assuming I got the chance), I'd have STERN WORD prepared.

It should never have been approved.

Were you really about to meet Trudeau while not knowing about one of the most significant federal infrastructure investments of the last 5 years? In what context?

I was going to be in the same tent (or room).
I'd have made it a mission to give him the wassup salute. We may have chatted. I reckon given my connections and experience, there was a better than average chance. More, if booze was involved.

I've button-holed my share of ministers and MPs before.

I was going to attend an event in Quebec, but declined to travel half a world away to... be sad. (lithium mine opening. I've been out of fossil fuels for a while, TMX was... something I was aware of, but I a lot happens when you don't pay attention)

Damn, I thought Alberta was way west of you.
My knowledge of Canada is not 100%.
But, I've been in a similar situation, and it's horrific.

Seems like an Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore style issue!
We could do something about it, globally.

Or ... not.

Smoke from the Alberta wildfires has spread across the continent. It's not like it's can't-see-ahead-of-you smoke from 3000km away, but there's been enough to change the colour of the sunsets and impact air quality.

Oh, that's not so bad. We are still dealing with the last Pacific volcano. Awesome sunsets the past few years, air quality I expect if fine.

My panic is when ash falls on my house how.
