Alberta voters should have a new tax, with the revenues going directly to compensate victims of the wildfires in Nova Scotia. The amount of tax will be determined by the amount of physical damage + pain and suffering. Let's see how the UCP's promises of low taxes (at the cost of human rights and the planet) stack up once externalities are factored in.
Also, before you say it, I know that Notley isn't much better on bootlicking the oil and gas sector. But Smith is smugger about it and a literal fascist, so fuck her and everyone who voted for her.

Date: 2023-05-31 09:08 am (UTC)That usually is not a good sign. When industry, especially oil and gas, want regulation they are the winners.
Many are willing to take action on climate change if there is a fair playing field established where everyone is regulated
In my experience they say this but they don't believe it. They lie to themselves. They think they are vital.
It's easy for lefties/greens outside the province to shit on Notley because she's not stopping tar sands now but she's as good as is realistically possible
As a leftie/green outside the country, are they still approving tar sands developments? I've been out of the loop for a while now.
That's what Trudeau has done with TMX and that's a nightmare.
Trans Mountain Expansion is going ahead?
If I was still meeting Trudeau next month (assuming I got the chance), I'd have STERN WORD prepared.
It should never have been approved.

Date: 2023-06-01 09:50 am (UTC)I'd have made it a mission to give him the wassup salute. We may have chatted. I reckon given my connections and experience, there was a better than average chance. More, if booze was involved.
I've button-holed my share of ministers and MPs before.
I was going to attend an event in Quebec, but declined to travel half a world away to... be sad. (lithium mine opening. I've been out of fossil fuels for a while, TMX was... something I was aware of, but I a lot happens when you don't pay attention)

Date: 2023-05-31 10:53 am (UTC)I was thinking Notley was better just because she wasn't putting to put trans kids in camps or ban vaccines or whatever nightmare Smith has in mind, but my main concern is always not destroying the planet.
