podcast friday
Sep. 27th, 2024 07:11 am Rather than recommend a podcast, this week's Podcast Friday will just be an announcement that I've finally cancelled my Canadaland subscription. It's been a long time coming, and I suspected when a flood of their best contributors left, that was the sign I needed. But the kicker was Jesse Brown re-tweeting a lie by the Toronto Sun about something I was an eyewitness to, uncritically, without investigating the claims made.
It's clear that he's alienated the better journalists on the podcast, and that he's auditioning for a job in the right-wing griftosphere. To be fair, there's more money in that than there is in being a real journalist. But it's disappointing and I don't know what to do with my bottle opener now.

I hope you told them why. It won't make much of a difference, probably, but everything helps.
I don't know what to do with my bottle opener now
Open bottles? I am sure you can scrub the label, if you feel the need.

IME, they will not take your response that seriously. They may. It depends who you are corresponding with (sales, "creatives" or other). But you can make a small difference if you target your language.
I don't know Canadaland at all, but if you suspect they have lost objectivity, I'd bet wary. Just assume whatever you write will become public.
I probably don't need to tell you this, though.
(If I were Canadaland, I'd want to put together a response show for clicks, and since they probably don't have a charter of neutrality... _

Date: 2024-09-27 02:39 pm (UTC)And it looks like Ling just quit the job he had just gotten to replace Goldsbie over the Paris Marx "edit". Whoooops!
And Mattea Roach is gone too. Kerplang.

Date: 2024-09-28 11:35 am (UTC)Goldsbie is also gone, theoretically to do some sort of an internship but it doesn't sound like he's happy??

Date: 2024-09-27 02:41 pm (UTC)Did the same this week for the exact same reason. I really honestly try not to see things in black & white but this situation (where I know there are falsehoods being circulated that are hurting my friends) really tipped the balance for me.
Why does almost every public figure that I like and admire eventually turn out to be a secret asshole? Makes me question my own judgement

Date: 2024-09-27 06:52 pm (UTC)Perfectly valid to simply throw the bottle opener away.

Date: 2024-09-28 11:36 am (UTC)Of course, the number of bottles I regularly need to open are approximately zero. And there is one built in to my corkscrew.
