Reading Wednesday
Oct. 23rd, 2024 07:24 am Just finished: The Witches of Moonshyne Manor by Bianca Marais. This one was really fun. I'd recommend it with the caveat that, like so many books with a Cool Unusual Concept, it was under-edited past the first few chapters.
(You submit your first few chapters to an agent, or the agent sends it them to a publisher. You have spent considerable time editing and workshopping these chapters until they gleam. The agent says, "goddamn I love this!" and the book is acquired. However, there are fewer editors with heavier workloads at publishers these days, so the rest of the book tends to be less polished.)
So there's things to critique in there—lots of plot threads or ideas get raised but never addressed—but the Cool Unusual Concept of octogenarian witches trying to save their home from being demolished because they're behind on the mortgage payments is rad af, and the characters are fantastic and vivid, and the writing is hella fun. It overcomes its flaws.
Currently reading: Nothing, since I finished that one last night. Next up is Igoli Egoli by Salimah Valiani though.
