I don't even know what this is.

After the usual scattered intro wherein they show us a bunch of random characters who will become important later, Drake gets murdered.

Okay Dick Wolf there is no cause for that. While some might argue that Drake's cover of "Hey There Delilah" is grounds for murder, I don't believe in the death penalty. Besides, Kendrick already murdered him. And honestly, it's not like I have any particular affection for Drake but I don't wish for him to die because as long as he's alive, there is the possibility that Kendrick will continue to publicly mock him.

(Please enjoy the Plain White Ts reacting to the worst song ever made.)

Anyway this episode is not really about Drake unfortunately, it is about Graff's obsession with Joseph Campbell. This episode took me from "I don't understand Graff or care about him as a character" to "OHHHH now I get it and I hate him." It begins with him massively overreacting to finding Drake's corpse, which is for some reason especially bad compared to, say, the discovery of a child's corpse in the last episode, and continues to his theory that the killer (who also murders two young women and is revealed to have also murdered his father) is motivated by the presence of "gatekeepers" preventing him from taking his hero's journey. There's absolutely no reason to believe this when Graff develops the theory, though it does turn out to be true by the end.

This episode is jam-packed with ridiculousness and the use of the word "gatekeeper" as often as possible. Besides the fact that I am annoyed that this is the second day in the row I've had to listen to someone uncritically babble about Joseph Campbell, we have a suspect ruled out because he's too rich and privileged. Which, like, is a very cop thing to do but I don't think they meant it to be a statement on how cops only serve and protect the rich. Then we have some geographical insanity, where Sherbourne is apparently located in Roncesvalles. Also the cops are very keen to track down a serial killer rather than just dismissing the possibility of one. The critical piece of evidence linking everything together is purple glitter.

Ultimately Graff is correct and the killer is a limo driver motivated by his feelings of being gatekept and yawn. You know when you hear a word too many times and it stops sounding like a real word? That is what happens with this.

Plot: * (I called that the limo driver did it as soon as there was a limo driver)
Characters: -*** (This loses points because I find out a whole bunch of things that I wish I didn't know about Graff, like the fact that he plays Connections every morning, majored in Classics, and thinks about the Roman Empire more than a normal amount)
Toronto: 0 (This gets one point for correctly locating Drake's house on the Bridal Path. I'm being very generous here, since that's international knowledge. However, it loses the point for putting Sherbourne in Roncesvalles for no reason.)

Murder count: 16 (22% of all murders in Toronto)

ONE EPISODE TO GO and then I can watch What We Do In the Shadows, which, while filmed in Toronto, is not set here.

Hahahahahaha, I love your recaps of this show. They’re way more enjoyable than watching it.

Obviously they're foreshadowing him being swindled into doing murders by not!Jordan Peterson, who makes him read the Golden Bough.

The important part first:
I can watch What We Do In the Shadows, which, while filmed in Toronto, is not set here.

It's not filmed in scenic Staten Island? *Gasp*

Drake gets murdered
Actual Drake? As in Jimmy from Degrassi? A bold choice!

thinks about the Roman Empire more than a normal amount

Is this the cause of the 'Men Think About The Roman Empire A Lot' meme? Does it post-date it, or is it co-incident?

(This gets one point for correctly locating Drake's house on the Bridal Path. I'm being very generous here, since that's international knowledge

So, I'd need to look it up, but ... Toronto has a Bridal Path? And Drake lives there? That seems like niche knowledge. Of course, I can't name a Drake song. Nor did I know Sherbourne or Roncesvalles existed. And I would have put the latter in Quebec.

Oh! I don't know my Drake enough to know if he was down to play dead, or not.

I am not clear what you're asking me here.
.
There was a meme about a year ago or so, I don't know the origins of, or how long it was a thing, about how men often think about the Roman Empire. I assumed this was a reaction to that.

You can Google things. It's not as easy as it used to be but the site still exists and everything.

I use DDG!
But my point was: none of the things you mentioned were known to me (and I was intimating I may not have my finger on the pulse), but they may not be well known outside Toronto. They may be.

I really am the worst communicator.

Drake, aka Canada’s richest child-groomer, has often enjoyed bragging about his house. So while yes, its location would likely be unknown to people completely unfamiliar with Drake, anyone who is familiar with him internationally likely knows it’s in the Toronto district equivalent to Beverly Hills.

As for not knowing any Drake songs, don’t googie it, just be grateful for your auditory good fortune.

It's really starting to feel EVERYONE is a groomer or rapist these days.

I only know Drake from Degressi, there's at least one template, and whatever the epic rap battles Tabby mentioned earlier that even pierced my 'lil bubble.

I am glad Toronto has its own Beverley Hills. I am sure it'll make all the American actors feel at home.
