It's hard to get to the subway station in the morning with my foot hurting (especially right after I wake up) and the snow. So I hobble, and what's typically a five minute walk seems to take forever and is excruciatingly painful. Today, I ran into a blind guy, also on his way to the subway. He asked where we were and I offered to help him. We must have looked like a sight -- him with his sunglasses and white cane, me with my pronounced hobble. But I got him to the subway, and semi-leaning on someone else, it was much easier and less painful for me to walk.

Mutual aid, y'know?

What is the festival of lights?

It's the annual Solstice celebration in Kensington Market (the coolest bit of Toronto, where Emma Goldman used to live). There's a Green Man beheading pageant, and fire-eaters, and people on stilts, and then everyone parades through the streets to the park, whereupon there is a big party. Also, lots of paper lanterns and giant puppets.

I'm thinking of visiting Toronto during reading week. Is Toronto worth visiting in late February/early March?

Toronto is always worth visiting! This said, it's as unpleasant in February as anywhere else in Canada, although I suppose it's slightly nicer than Ottawa that time of year.

You should come visit, though. There'll even be lots of space in the new apartment if you need somewhere to crash.

So far, it's just an idea. I'll see how my school work-load is when the time comes around. I've never visited Toronto without my parents (I was 13 last time I went and 6 the tmie before that). I'd love to check it out and see what all the fuss is about.

I lived on Clinton in front of the school for a year with Jonathan Culp and I was glad I moved out of the neighbourhood. I guess it's still downtown though =) I hope you're not being gouged with rent and you're not TOO close to College itself, or the annoying part anyway :P

when did emma goldman live in toronto? that's ringing only the faintest bells of memory in my mind, from reading her autobiography.

She died in Toronto in 1940 -- she lived there in the last few years of her life, after coming back from Russia, because she wasn't allowed back in the U.S. There was a recent biography that focused on her Toronto years, but I don't remember many details because that was the most boring time of her life.

Hmmm...it depends on the method of trolling. If you want to infiltrate or appear to be a real person, then yeah. But if your main concern is pissing off as many people in as short a time as possible or in racking up serial bannings, then there's no need to put that kind of work into it.
