What did Stephen Harper do this time?

a) Admit that he believed in evolution.
b) Pledge a full military presence in Canadian cities.
c) Eat a kitten during the live televised debate.

It's actually both a) and b), although the evolution thing was probably accidental. Alas, if this creepy son-of-a-bitch becomes PM, get ready for a load of police-state fun!

As far as I can tell, he has so far restricted his kitten-eating to private venues. Look for that to change if he wins, too.

EDIT: OMG! Rick Mercer did a spoof ad for CPC-ML! Go here, then click on the Communist Party graphic for comedy gold.

the Conservative Party also has an informal agreement withn the Liberals and NDP not to mention the occupation of Haiti, and part of the Conservative platform is to send a LOT of soldiers to Haiti and increase the military presence in the country.

This reminds me of the horrible scandal with East Timor. I suspect most Canadians didn't know about that, or how nasty it really was. It's one of Canada's few true sins.

I didn't know you guy were in on the occupation of Haiti, either.

We don't have much troops on the ground (if at all), but we have volunteer (!) police officers training the new police there, and of course we gave political legitimacy to the whole thing by welcoming it.

Right now there are five Canadian soldiers in Haiti: staff officers serving with the UN "stabilization mission" there.

Operation HALO, which saw about 500 Canadian soldiers and six helicopters sent to Haiti, lasted from March to August 2004. They probably found someplace nastier to send them.

What Harper is proposing is not so much an urban redeployment of the military, but a turning back of the clock.

He mentioned "territorial battalions made up of 100 regular troops and 400 or more reservists" to be stationed in Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, etc.. There are already hundreds of militia in all of these cities, in organized units that have been there for more than 150 years in some cases. Each unit has numbers of full-time Regular Force support staff, and most militia units have a notional place in the Army's structure of regional brigades (for example, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment is the "fourth" battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI)). So this is not so much a redeployment as a reorganization.

"Harper also announced he would [snip] restore a regular army presence in British Columbia with a new rapid reaction army battalion of 650 regular force personnel."

The Third Battalion of the PPCLI was deployed in Victoria until the mid 90s. First it was made a reserve unit, moved to Chilliwack, then it was reactivated to a Regular Force unit and placed in Edmonton.

So it's really just going full circle, and it's not meant to signal the start of a domestic occupation. Remember that Metro Toronto has more beat cops than Canada has infantry soldiers, and it's likely to stay that way for a long time, no matter how much $$$ Harper wants to put into the military.

I still want to see him eat a kitten, though.

Being a dumb American, I really have no clue about this guy (although I am learning, thanks to you!) but I couldn't help but notice an eerie resemblence in your icon to our new Chief Justice John Roberts... Or maybe it's just me.

He's admitted that views can evolve, which also means that if elected he can go back on what he's saying during this campaign. No surprise there.
