Does kitty have all his claws? And how does that happen? Walking on your face at night? Rough play?

I'm just curious -- I've been thinking hard lately about cat guardianship (it'd be a first since I was raised among dog people but over the past few years have come to adore cats) and I'm 99.8% sure about not declawing. Facial scratches sound fairly unpleasant... but, I dunno, breaking their toe bones sounds like a harsher penalty.

Both kitties have all their claws. I'm against declawing in all but a few very extreme circumstances. I suspect that someone was either walking on my face last night or was trying to wake me up at some point.

The scratches aren't really unpleasant; I didn't notice them at all until I went to wash my hands just now and looked in the mirror. It's a small price to pay for the joy of cleaning up someone's puked-up gooshy food this morning having the company of such cute kitties.

I think it depends on the personality and desposition of your cat on how much you'll get scratched. If you and the cat have a good relationship the cat should only rarely scratch you, like when he/she gets too carried away while playing or when you pick him/her up when it doesn't want to be bothered with, etc.

But I've had cats that had wierd personalities and scratched for no appearent reason also.

I'd be much more worried about your furniture being scratched if it's new and nice.

I wake up with scratches on my arms and chest from Roisindubh all the time. Apparently she runs over me when she gets into her little playful fits during my sleep. She sleeps with me, you see, and then I suppose she gets playful and tries to wake me up.
