I hate and love my cellphone (I sleep with my head next to the phone and now have the occassional phantom phone ringing in my head). I really think that people who fixate on the NSA phone monitoring thing have some delusions about their email. I mean it is so much easier to snoop on your email/blogs/forum-posting that if the NSA is phone-monitoring you they are already doing it to other facets of your life. In my case, Customs Canada has decided that they will open each piece of mail that arrives for me.

It's true, but everyone is (or should be) paranoid about what they do online. Whereas people are careless as hell on cells. Also, cells are more annoying.

That database is just the tip of the total information awareness project... I don't know why the media aren't pointing out to more links. google has shown us that unlimited database size is now possible.

This reminds me of the stickers I had picked up in this shop in Victoria... it was the image of a telephone earpiece with a speech bubble containing a potleaf in it, and the words "careful, this phone is tapped."

like brownfist said, I'm a lot more wary of online communication because text is much more easily searchable than audio, although give it a couple more years and they'll develop fairly automated phone call transcription. hopefully subversives can gain a few years by switching to languages like dari and gujarati hehe.

I think it doesn't matter whether it's a cellphone or a landline, except that if you're on the run you'll have to ditch the cellphone for it not to act like a homing beacon.

Anyway; people have to be security conscious but not let their paranoia take over their lives. I'm just amused because this whole thing plays into my hatred of phones.

I personally think a cellphone for me is a vital organizing tool. So as much as I hate it, it has served as a bloody useful tool. When I was in NYC we used it to communicate protests and warn one another about cops and where they were coming from. In Toronto, it serves as a great tool for flying squads. I personally think the Left is so infiltrated by cops that they dont even need to tap our phones and leaking the information about the phone-tapping deflects from the real invasions of personal privacy like medical records, library records, purchasing patterns etc.

Well, I think this was going on before Bush, but less blatant and fewer people knew about it.

I have a few books on Soviet posters, but they're mainly about the (classier) avant-garde stuff and less about the kitschy later ones. They sell these awesome packages of posters in Russia though—with translations on the back.
