I saw her in Montréal. After this song, she sang one about being a schoolteacher and her mother sat in the audience and threw gum at everyone.

Yes, yes Hogtown (and the rest of Southern Ontario) needs to Do Something.

I recommend instituting a full-car rule for commuters. Set up photo-radar tolls throughout the city, and at the city limits, and fine people driving around with empty cars.

Also, an aggressive advertising and public education campaign aimed at inner-suburbanites and 905-ers, pointing out that driving contributes directly to the smog that contributes directly to their kids' respiratory ailments.

Also banning temperatures above 30 degrees celsius. That'll work.

Threw gum at everyone? I'm assuming it was not pre-chewed gum! :P

Sorry to hear about the smog. Over here, we're just a few miles away from several chemical and oil refineries, over in Richmond. You should see the Richmond fire department, and what kind of equipment they have. Talk about a city service that doesn't worry about budget cuts! (Gigantic fire trucks that are brand new, and mobile locker rooms with hazmat suits, also spit-polish new!)

i just found this... im doing more searches for the cancer rate facts.

The discovery of the Greenpoint underground Oil spill. One of the suprising facts (estimated
by a ground water investigative firm) is that while the Valdez spill in Alaskan waters weighed in at approximately 10 million gallons of oil, the Greenpoint seepage calculated at a spread of 52 acres, and at a whopping 17 million gallons! In 1950 there was a huge underground explosion that resulted when gasoline seeped into a sewer pipe Subsequently the oil spill was discovered after the explosion, after accumulating
underground sometime in the 30's

Yeah I heard about this too. Pretty fucked up. What's also pretty sad and conflicting is that the only reason why this situation is being paid any attention is because the neighborhood is in the process of gentrification/ real estate hike/ class change. If it were still a predominantly working class neighborhood, nobody would care- except the folks living there.

Is it in London (the real London) that they tax people driving within a certain zone, ecouraging people to park on the outskirts and use transit within the city proper? I also think the tax varies depending on the gunk-output of the vehicle.

I like that idea. Of course I always like the idea of selfish wasteful pigs actually having to pay for being selfish wasteful pigs.

Central London has a Congestion Toll, put in place to reduce traffic congestion and its attendant ills.

Would that Toronto would adopt something similar, ideally stretching from Bloor St. to the Lake, between Pape and Lansdowne.

Of course that would make the entire Docklands, the film district, and a few industrial areas expensive for deliveries, but other cities have managed.

Were it just a bit smoggier, the CN tower would look like a monster UFO.

One hopes that rising gas prices do impel increased use of public transportation. It seems to have around here - even with fare increases, ridership seems to have grown. And it looks like we will be getting commuter rail to Denver.
