So every time I open American Gods on the streetcar to read it, some guy is going to inevitably use it as an excuse to initiate an awkward conversation. Am I right?

Look, if I wanted to talk to someone, I wouldn't have my face buried in a book, now would I?

Right-wing "feminists" like Paglia.

Redhead+fantasy novel= awkward boy magnet. Sorry, it's a law of the universe.

"'Well, looks like we got ourselves a reader.' What the fuck's going on here? It's not like I walked into a Klan rally in a Boy George outfit, God damn it. It's a book!"

I do. I can't read a book while I'm at work, even if it's something completely fucking dense and boring like Hegel, without someone coming up and talking to me about it.

"Whoa ho ho ho ho! We've got a professor here! ho ho ho ho ho!"

I think that's the risk of reading anything by Gaiman.

Maybe if you covered it with the jacket for "Godless: The Church of Liberalism"?

Of course Ann Coulter would get you another set of guys bothering you, but those you can without any regrets kick right in the 'nads.
