In more cheerful news, one of my friends is back from Iraq. In hindsight, running into his arms and shrieking, "OMG YOU'RE NOT DEAD!" in the middle of Bloor St. was perhaps ill-advised, but I was happy to see him.

At any rate, it seems that the Kurdish region is not quite as safe and happy as you hear on the news. Dissenters—communists, trade unionists, and various progressives—are getting shot at, not just by the Americans but also by the government. So much for freeing the Kurds from teh evil Saddam. My friend says it hasn't worked out that well for them. And that's among the safer regions. Even he wasn't insane enough to go to Baghdad.

Not much of an update, I know; it was the middle of Bloor St., after all. I'll hopefully be able to catch up with him more at some point for some interesting details.

He had his reasons, but how insane do you have to be to go to Iraq on your summer vacation?

How Insane?

Have you seen this poll?

The Kurds are finally seeing the writing on the wall, methinks.

But who cares if only 91.7% of Iraqis want the Americans out? The Americans are there to establish a democracy!

im reading THE FALL OF BAGHDAD right now by jon lee anderson... its really great. jon was there right before the war and was interviewing the iraqis (and iraqis in exile in iran) about their thoughts and opinions (which he admits were limited due to saddam's love of free speech and disagreement with the government)... but in any case, it's really interesting to hear the different POVs about america invading and how they think it will turn out.. not to mention how they think the americans need to do it.

What, someone is questioning the commitment of the IUK and the PKK to multiparty democracy on the Western pluralist model? I'm shocked.
