The making of a pretty good weekend

Things I did this weekend:

• Met dobrovolets and [spouse] IRL.
• Went to Word on the Street and bought books (One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez; The Scar, China Miéville; The Possibilities, Howard Barker; and the second issue of Violet Miranda: Girl Pirate, Emily Pohl-Weary). I know you were all afraid that I didn't have enough books.
• Made curry.
• Watched episodes of Veronica Mars with zingerella and human_loser, post-curry.
• Bore witness to Billy Bragg's impersonation of a small hamster eating a biscuit twice the size of its own head. I mean, the entire show was all kinds of awesome, but finding out that Billy goes on YouTube and watches kitten videos was, bizarrely, among the highlights for me.

One thing I did not do this weekend:

• Get a great deal of sleep.

Oh well.

By the way, what do you think of Veronica Mars? They lost me a little by the end of season 2, but I think it's a pretty worthy successor to Buffy.

I'm the better part of the way through season 1, and I'm still making the little squealy noises that I used to make once I realized that Buffy was actually a good show and not stupid. In other words, I'm pretty into it (a.k.a. utterly addicted).

I found that about two teaspoons of fresh ginger and two teaspoons of fresh garlic are a good way to kick it up. You saute those first in the oil, maybe add a little bit of chili paste, then do the onions, etc.

I throw them in the food processor first and turn them into paste. That ensures that all the oils get released when cooking. You might have to use more than two tsps. I don't measure it. I just grab a few cloves and a chunk. It's touchy-feely. You get the picture.

Love for Veronica Mars. That show is seriously problematic in many ways, but I still love it!!!

I think the problematic bits are some of my favourites. It's one of the few shows I've seen actually address race and class in a semi-realistic manner. And it's entertaining like whoa.

Oh, I agree with those reasons being the reason I like it, but it becomes problematic in my mind for example when they try and make Logan a kind of likeable character. And I think some of the portrayls are really stereotypical. But yes, I love it! :)

See, I like what they've done with Logan (although I'm unspoiled, so maybe he turns into more of a prick later). Because he's certainly not admirable, but he's assholish in a interesting way. And while he's not the sort of person I'd like to know in real life, it's fascinating as hell to watch him on TV.

OTOH, I think they're shoving Wallace into the Token Black Best Friend slot a bit too much. I hope he ends up getting an actual plot at some point.

and yeah, I agree about wallace, and I also feel the same way about the portrayl of all the latino "gang members" and her friend (weable is it?)

The last one I saw was the one with the mascot thievery and Veronica finding her mom.

My main problem with Weevil is that he's not in enough episodes. He has too many, "if I were a rich white guy, I would get away with [blank]" lines, but since that's true, I don't find him as stereotypical.
