As [livejournal.com profile] charlemagne77 has pointed out before, making fun of the Hitch is a bit too easy to be truly satisfying. Nevertheless, we all know that sometimes he's just really asking for it.

Joining the pile-on: Twisty, Zuzu, Amanda, and of course, charlemagne77.

He has really let himself go.

Consider this an open thread for the mockery of everyone's favourite gin-soaked ex-Trotskyite popinjay.

it is the most boring, stupid, unimaginative article I've read in a long time by him. and that is one of many boring, stupid, unimaginative articles.

He wouldn't know a joke if it came served on a bed of lettuce with sauce béarnaise.

okay - and now that I have read all the links. . .

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Amanda is clearly a guy.

To wrap this up with a dry unfunny and feminine ending - I will say that I am somehow the looser in all this since until this post I had never noticed this guy. I didn't know he existed.

I have totally failed to ever show him my molars and open tubular throat hole.

Was there any point to that entire article that couldn't have been more concisely summarised as 'I'm a boring dickhead'? Oh, right, thought not...

w-w-w-what?

And by that I mean, which women has he been hanging out with? Maybe this article is symptomatic of his own lack of humour skills and quick departure of the nevertheless ample supply of funny women from his life.

I don't think he really hangs out with any women. Really, who could put up with him?

Well, he is married, right?

When I met him at the Demo convention in New York in '92, he was with a BBC crew and they were shooting a documentary about Clinton---who was already on Hitch's radar---and the female producer (who was quite a looker, I must say) seemed to worship Hitch. Of course, that was almost 15 years ago, and he had not yet become such an insufferable, arrogant bore.

Eeeerrrrmm...

That has to be the most bizarre subect I've seen for an article in a while. I don't think I've ever heard anyone suggest there was a definitive humor gap between genders. It makes as much sense as an article called "Why the purple monkey won't leave my dishwasher."

What with being a Trotskyist, we can't be sure what he's really thinking now. This all may be a convoluted strategy to draw the working masses alligned with the Neo-Conservative wing of the Republican party closer to a marxist line!

I'm torn. On the one hand, I think that posts like mine, yours, Amanda's, Echidne's, etc. are eminently necessary, and range from drily amusing, if a little ponderous (guess who), to truly inspired (Sauce bearnaise!). On the other, I think of Daniel Green's essay about how Hitchens' failure as a literary critic, and wonder if there's any point in addressing oneself to any remarks of his in which the political content is less obviously concentrated than in questions of corruption, electioneering and war. Hitchens once lamented his inability to write fiction of the caliber of friends like Amis, McEwan and Barnes, and I'm reminded of what he wrote about Mencken's inability to register the threat of Nazism (in stark contrast to his slight derangement by the progress of the New Deal): "think of the literary failure" involved in all of this. Perhaps it once was possible to dismiss women as the unknowable Other, while simultaneously regarding them as utterly transparent, and still write novels and short stories of lasting value (so much for Martin Amis), but the middle of the last century was simply too late to be born for that.
