Let me get this straight:

You can be jailed without being charged with anything.
You do not have the right to know why you have been detained.
You cannot be tortured, so the torturers will simply change the definition of torture.
You can be executed on the basis of testimony that you've given while you are being tortured enthusiastically questioned.
You can be executed on the basis of evidence given by someone else, while that person was being tortured.
If your lawyer wants to defend you, he or she has to run it by the government first.
We can hold you as long as we like. "Until hostilities cease" is a funny phrase in the context of perpetual war against abstract concepts.

I feel like I'm repeating myself most of the time.

This is so wrong.

I'm neither shocked nor surprised. I guess I always suspected this was the case for the detainnees.

Amnesty International might be a good charity to support at this time... They're running an ad campaign in DC's bus terminals right now, huge ads with "The America We Believe In Does Not Torture" or something like that. $43 pays for a day.

That is sickening. Not surprising, but utterly sickening. Some days I just wish I could go back to bed and hide under the covers until it all goes away.

Yeah, that's the flaw in that plan. :(

I don't have anything to add, other than that I suffer along with you.

Americans were spineless enough to just let it happen.

Y'know what really makes me sick? The Irish Republic let the American Government force an agreement that allows the CIA and FBI to enter the home of any Irish citizen, arrest them, take them back to America, fuck with/sieze their property, search their home, ad nauseum, over the terror issue.

It makes me sick. Do they do this to the fucking Orangemen in the North? I'm certain they do not.

WTF? I hadn't heard this one either. When did it happen, and do have any linkage? *hopeful*

This was a Yahoo! news article I read over a year ago.

I'll try to find links, so friend me and you'll see them when I post them on my LJ.

Why not post the link(s) in response to one of the comments in this thread?

Here's the link:

Put in the search, there were plenty of examples of this story and this isn't the original one that I read.

Thanks for the link to a white supremacist site.

I didn't realize it was a white supremacist site. I simply listed the first link. I didn't pay attention to what site it was. Now I realize why sabotabby complained about it - I didn't know who 'National Vanguard' was. I do now.

When yahoo! search came up with the list of search results, I listed the first one. This is just a case of oversight.

On the other hand, consider this:

It's necessary to pay attention to what these people are doing in order to guarantee that we can educate people against them. For example, no one paid attention to what Hitler promised to do in 'Mein Kampf'. We in the Left need to be watching what these people do. So, in all truth, some of us should be watching what these people are writing and saying.

For example, if you look at my most recent entry, I found out on the web that there is now a white power version of the Olsen twins. I'm going to share the article with my students, who are largely of color. I intend to further butress my assertion with them that they need to be exceedingly cynical towards the media.

Enthusiastically questioned. You crack me up. When I'm not screaming in terror.

Call me cynical, but I don't think any of these rules are new...

What gets me are the numbers, they only have evidence to bring to trial 60-80 of 400 prisoners. Another 380 people have been let go. Never ending madness.
