Yes and no. There were action adventure bits throughout and for the first half it seemed to do a good job of weaving between. You are right in that the dark stops at rescue fight, but it briefly reappears at the end when he can't get to his lung valve because his hands are tied. You may have seen this coming a mile away, but the people I saw it with really thought he was going to die which would have given it an ironic Das Boot-like ending. But the do-gooder thread was introduced as soon as they met the insurgents, which was fairly early on.
