It's interesting how unpopularity and associating with "oddball" elements creates a b-line to communism. On the one hand, this explains quite a lot about you and me. But on the other hand I hope this might prompt schools, churches, and other community and social organizations to take proactive measures to help children become better integrated with their more normal, mainstream peers.
