1. Dr. Horrible: Awesome or awesome, amirite?

2. The trailer to Watchmen: Will this break our hearts? Needs more Rorschach? Looks like it won't be as much of a mutilation of the source material as V for Vendetta was?

That trailer was terrible. The music should have been 80s style punk or something. Also, too much Dr. Manhattan. It was rather unimpressive in many ways.

Dr. Horrible is great :).

No, I don't think you are in the minority. I think the director is a dumbass.

I feel the same way you do. Dr. Manhattan is not the center of the story. The center of the story is more like Rorschach. Yet, this trailer hints at it becoming some kind of hero epic headed by Dr. Manhattan. Gag.

Dr. M. was an idea, not a character. I always felt like that was the point. Hopefully this director got that, too, and just thought he looked cooler for the trailer.

too nervous to watch the... watchmen trailer. i'll wait until i'm a little closer to actually being awake.

your icon made me smile.

have you read ken macleod? china mievelle? i really wish i knew that ursula k. le guin lived in portland before she died. i would have given anything to see a reading from her. i would also give anything to film the dispossessed and have no idea why it hasn't been aside from le guin holding out for a director she felt could film it.

UH, YOU ALMOST GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK!

As far as I know, Le Guin is absolutely still alive! (and still lives in Portland). Trufax: I went to college in Oregon primarily because I wanted to meet her. (And I did). It's not too late!

you gave me a goddamn heart attack! what the fuck have i been doing thinking she'd died?!?! i swear to god i read an article and could have sworn i even made an entry about it because i was really sad. holy fuck, le guin is resurrected, hallelujah! hallelujah! ...time to go wandering portland yelling out her name haha.

(totally embarrassed but laughing both hysterically and with excitement. i could get to see a reading from her!)

haha yeah, now i find out! that was so bizarre, like falling asleep in the afternoon and waking up the "next morning" wondering why it's still completely dark and then realizing it's 8 at night, not in the morning.

macleod is highly recommended, you'd love him. have you read iain banks? rudy rucker? wait, why don't i just ask who some of your favorite sci-fi authors are?

I keep trying to watch Dr. Horrible, but I just can't get into it. I suck, according to Nick.

Otherwise... Holy fucking fuck! My faith in this film has totally been restored. But I may just be working myself up for nothing. Boo.

You know, oddly enough I'm a little more optimistic about Watchmen. It looks very true to the material (from what I could tell) and I've heard that he used the comic as a storyboard, which the trailer for the most part supports. The only thing different I really saw was it looks like they made the fire rescue scene a little more flashy for film.

And as for 300... I wouldn't say I found it particularly racist or homophobic. I think, like all Frank Miller's stuff, it was just really really shallow. Putting it on film just highlighted those aspects. That's why it had to be so pretty. There's nothing below the surface. At the very least, Snyder was true to the source material.
Though I DID hate the sex scene with Gorgo. Apparently only WOMEN breathe when they have sex. Fuckin' male gaze... but how's this for a contradiction--I LOVED the way he filmed the oracle.

I have a theory about how Frank Miller makes his "art." I think he gets really hard, then he JAMS a pen or brush into his urethra and then paints with his rock hard cock.

That's just how ol' Frankie rolls. Cuz he's so manly you know.
From: [identity profile] ghostwes.livejournal.com
Did you ever read Miller's political satire Give Me Liberty? I guess the conservative brain-eater hadn't got to him yet at that point because it was neither right-wing nor stupid. I still think it holds up well.

Also, the art is by Watchmen's Dave Gibbons, to bring this full circle.

It may be rank heresy, but I actually preferred the movie version of V For Vendetta to the graphic novel. The book got too bogged down in extraneous details in places... and I liked the portrayal of Evie better in the movie, too.

Me too.

Movie Evie never would have had the guts to do what Comic Evie did.

That is rank heresy! Seriously, though, really?

It could be because I saw the movie first, and really liked it. I liked the performances of the main actors, and especially how they interrelated with each other; I also really like Stephen Fry.

It's kinda like my reaction to the movie and then the novel of Silence of the Lambs (not that I'm comparing them to V For Vendetta, just that it's the same situation; I also saw the movie first, like I did V)... the movie pared out a lot of extra background details that just (IMO) cluttered up the plot -- the movie tightened things up, focused the story better.

If I'd read the graphic novel first, then who knows....
