Jul. 18th, 2008 11:27 am1. Dr. Horrible: Awesome or awesome, amirite?
2. The trailer to Watchmen: Will this break our hearts? Needs more Rorschach? Looks like it won't be as much of a mutilation of the source material as V for Vendetta was?

Date: 2008-07-18 04:24 pm (UTC)The music was wrong. I like the visuals, though. And since they completely gave away the ending, I guess they're not changing it.

Date: 2008-07-18 04:27 pm (UTC)I feel the same way you do. Dr. Manhattan is not the center of the story. The center of the story is more like Rorschach. Yet, this trailer hints at it becoming some kind of hero epic headed by Dr. Manhattan. Gag.

have you read ken macleod? china mievelle? i really wish i knew that ursula k. le guin lived in portland before she died. i would have given anything to see a reading from her. i would also give anything to film the dispossessed and have no idea why it hasn't been aside from le guin holding out for a director she felt could film it.

Date: 2008-07-18 05:19 pm (UTC)As far as I know, Le Guin is absolutely still alive! (and still lives in Portland). Trufax: I went to college in Oregon primarily because I wanted to meet her. (And I did). It's not too late!

Date: 2008-07-19 03:13 am (UTC)Dr. Horrible is awesome. Now my Watchmen/300 rant:
Date: 2008-07-19 03:03 am (UTC)And as for 300... I wouldn't say I found it particularly racist or homophobic. I think, like all Frank Miller's stuff, it was just really really shallow. Putting it on film just highlighted those aspects. That's why it had to be so pretty. There's nothing below the surface. At the very least, Snyder was true to the source material.
Though I DID hate the sex scene with Gorgo. Apparently only WOMEN breathe when they have sex. Fuckin' male gaze... but how's this for a contradiction--I LOVED the way he filmed the oracle.
I have a theory about how Frank Miller makes his "art." I think he gets really hard, then he JAMS a pen or brush into his urethra and then paints with his rock hard cock.
That's just how ol' Frankie rolls. Cuz he's so manly you know.
Re: Dr. Horrible is awesome. Now my Watchmen/300 rant:
Date: 2008-07-19 03:17 am (UTC)Not that I didn't enjoy it, in a so-bad-it's-good kind of way. But I'll take Sin City over it any day for guilty Frank Miller pleasure.
Re: Dr. Horrible is awesome. Now my Watchmen/300 rant:
Date: 2008-07-19 11:37 am (UTC)Also, the art is by Watchmen's Dave Gibbons, to bring this full circle.

Date: 2008-07-24 09:38 am (UTC)It could be because I saw the movie first, and really liked it. I liked the performances of the main actors, and especially how they interrelated with each other; I also really like Stephen Fry.
It's kinda like my reaction to the movie and then the novel of Silence of the Lambs (not that I'm comparing them to V For Vendetta, just that it's the same situation; I also saw the movie first, like I did V)... the movie pared out a lot of extra background details that just (IMO) cluttered up the plot -- the movie tightened things up, focused the story better.
If I'd read the graphic novel first, then who knows....
