Stalin might have come from Georgia, but he is still a very popular figure in Russian history (cue ironic remarks about how, in the week of Solzhenitsyn's funeral, it emerges that Stalin is one of the most admired figures by Russians). I figure Putin is doing his best to mimic Stalin in this - may not play well in Beijing but will go down a treat in Moscow.

Seems to me both sides are totally fucked up here. Georgia, hoping to take back S. Ossetia while Putin was in Beijing before Russia could do anything and shelling a city they claim is part of their own country and pretty well destroying the place with maybe 1,400 killed? Not cool. And Russia's response, bombing everything in sight in Georgia with similar consequences? (Having pretty much been angling for this sort of thing to happen for quite a while.) Also not cool.

I'm not looking foreward to Chechnyia Part. II. I hated the first movie, too brutal, bloody and it had an incoherent plot.

Bad as things are, I doubt it'll be a Chechnya part II. Or part III, rather. Russia in 1999 was determined to hold onto Chechnya, whatever it took, and have more or less succeeded, on the basis of immense and continuing brutality. I don't think they want to actually conquer Georgia. So how this'll go down is that the Georgians will be driven out of South Ossetia (which is pretty much happening already), and possibly Abkhazia, then there'll be a ceasefire - but no solution - and it'll be back to a 'frozen' conflict, though with Russia probably de facto integrating S. Ossetia and Abkhazia into Russia even more than they have been doing. So unlike Chechnya, the killing will probably stop within a few days or weeks at most. Though it's already been horrifying enough, by the sound of it, especially in Tskhinvali.
