I don't remember the last time I was so happy to have been wrong.

At any rate, congratulations, Americans. Remember that one somewhat improbable victory doesn't mean that everything is going to be sunshine and puppies* now. I hope Obama's win prompts people to fight harder rather than get complacent.

You were here for this amazing historical moment. Now go out and make some more.

* Did he really say he was going to buy his daughter a puppy? Because hee hee hee.

Oh, yes, he told his kids months ago that win or lose they were getting a puppy after the election. He told it at a smaller speaking engagement, IIRC -- the clip was on YouTube and it was freaking adorable. :)

You know what is really uplifting?
The number of non-U.S. citizens all happy about the U.S. right now. :)

Unfortunately I think it will pass as soon as they remember everything that came before last night and probably a lot that will come after.
I keep bringing myself down!

You thought his victory was improbable? I was kinda certain of his victory since January, but that might be as a result of living in Manhattan (heavily Democrat), and going to Obama's Alma Mater (people were dancing in the streets and screaming "OBAMA! OBAMA!" all around campus last night) .

I'm happy that he won, but worried that he's raised expectations to high for him to meet, even if he does an excellent job. Brilliant public speaker, and no doubt brilliant otherwise, but it shall be interesting to see how he adapts to the presidency. How will his idealistic vision be affected by the realities of what can actually be done with our current resources?

I worry about what'll happen when he runs into all the stuff that people think a president can do but a president can't actually do because powerful special interests are, well, powerful. (See also Tony Benn in the seventies, etc.)

[eta: Tony Benn, formerly Lord Stansgate but disclaimed it on principle, may be an obscure figure outside the UK:

As a minister, I experienced the power of industrialists and bankers to get their way by use of the crudest form of economic pressure, even blackmail, against a Labour Government. Compared to this, the pressure brought to bear in industrial disputes is minuscule. This power was revealed even more clearly in 1976 when the IMF secured cuts in our public expenditure. These lessons led me to the conclusion that the UK is only superficially governed by MPs and the voters who elect them. Parliamentary democracy is, in truth, little more than a means of securing a periodical change in the management team, which is then allowed to preside over a system that remains in essence intact. If the British people were ever to ask themselves what power they truly enjoyed under our political system they would be amazed to discover how little it is, and some new Chartist agitation might be born and might quickly gather momentum.]

I know, I chuckled at the puppy remark too.

Now I want some fucking health care. And indictments. Where on the ballot do I check for "Indictments, plz"?

oh there was no conceivable way he could have lost, he's been so far ahead in the polls for his entire campaign (except for a week long blip when palin showed up, it ended as soon as her first interview).

in related news, marijuana has just been decriminalized in the commonwealth of massachusetts! first we spearheaded gay marriage, now this! AND WE'RE OBVIOUSLY BETTER THEN CALIFORNIA AGAIN!

HOORAY, OBVIOUSLY BETTER THEN CALIFORNIA!

Not only do Sasha and Melia Obama get a puppy, but apparently Biden promised his wife a "big dog" when the campaign was over. Dogs, dogs, everywhere!

I'm such a dog nerd, I actually thought this morning that I hoped there would be a petition asking them to get rescued dogs.

Yeah - It was a night the likes of which I have not seen. It was almost like breathing.

Though I didn't vote for him - and I am deeply scared about a lot of things - it was quite a night.

Jesse Jackson crying.

Gah - I lost my tough guy right around there.

And Obama aside - as far as racial moments in our country - I am proud to have been here for this one.
