Okay, two trailers for upcoming movies made from books I loved made the friends list rounds in the last few days.

First up, a Watchmen viral marketing thingie that, at last, hits what I think is the correct tone:

(Please tell me that the cartoon will be included as a DVD extra.) Anyway, you know you want to watch the shit out of this, even if it ends up being disappointing.

I'm less enthused about the trailer for Coraline, though:

As I was ranting about to [livejournal.com profile] rohmie, both the animation and the voices seem wrong to me. The book is creepy as fuck in a way that that a mere description of the plot can't convey, and this seems too much like a cute and quirky family movie.

But I can be proven wrong. Discuss!

On another note, for some reason I didn't know that they'd translated the book of Night Watch, and I was terribly excited to see it in a bookstore. I went all squee! because when I was in Russia, it was the thing. I saw the movie but, well, you know how these things are. It didn't make much sense, particularly in translation. Obviously it is not much of a cultural phenomenon here, but I'm wondering whether it's shown up on the radar at all.

Hence, a poll:

Saw Daywatch too. I liked the first one better. Man, Russians sure pick some goofy-lookin' outfits sometimes....

'night watch' has been available for ages, le sab, even before the film was released over here.
i picked it up in the bookist and read a few pages, found the prose awful, and put it back.
to be fair, it might just be a dodgy translation.
as to 'coraline,' i do look forward to taking my wee niece to see it.
she's excited about it.

I am an enthusiastic Night Watch fan. Ignore [livejournal.com profile] lokilokust, the prose is excellent and it's as much several people arguing about ethics as it is urban fantasy. The movies are pale shadows of the books.

You're right; that trailer isn't creepy at all. But I think maybe you just saw the wrong one. Check out this one. It's short, but better.

Or try going here; you'll want to watch the first video.

I've seen both movies and had very weird sexual experience the most recent time I watched the first one.

I've been meaning to get the books since I found out they were available (about a year ago).

I saw Nightwatch, but missed Daywatch when I had the chance to see it on big screen.

Apropos of absolutely nothing in this post, I would like to submit for your humble approval, the working title of a possible documentary about shepherds in the South part of the West Bank: "All Your Sheeps Are Belong To Us: An Expose of the Israeli Settler Movement".

Whaddya think?

Somewhere someone is making a Frost / Nixon - Watchmen crossover.

Has Moore renounced this one yet? I forget.

I saw Night Watch and Day Watch and read the Watchmen all while I was in Winnipeg for the holidays this year (it was a very watchy holiday?). I'm curious to know what the Dozor books are like, so I hope you'll tell us all once you've had the chance to read them. Coraline I read ages ago, and I agree with you that the trailers don't capture the creepy energy very well.

you know the author of night watch (Lukyanenko) has an lj, right? only writes in russian. i'm too rusty for it to be worth it. but i think it's [livejournal.com profile] doctor_livsy. his short stories are pretty much porn to me because they're all about light.

I watched the Dr. Manhattan Watchmen trailer and it made me cry. Goddamnit why are they going to make it suck so much?

Why does Dr. Manhattan sound like some preppy junky?
Why does he BLINK?

Why must things I love get stabbed in the face???

We got Night Watch and Day Watch at indie theaters in LA, if you're curious.

All of my students here know those movies, since the author and director are both from Kazakhstan.

That specific trailer, for Coraline, is no good.
But don't forget that trailers are often edited in a way that the actual film is unrecognisable.
I agree that the animation is a little bit too flowing, it would have been better if it gave the impression of actually "stopping" like in "The Nightmare Before Christmas".
I'm looking forward to it still.

The Watchmen viral is brilliant!!!!!

Nick loved the film Night Watch. But, apparently, he likes all things Russian... russian tanks, russian accents, russian special forces, russian vampires. Whatever. He's a video game nerd. I tried watching it, but couldn't get into it.

Otherwise:

I know Neil Gaiman's pretty excited about Coraline & he's been rather involved in the making of the movie. I also think he really liked the film, but don't quote me on that. Sometimes I don't pay that close attention to his blog.

I saw both Night Watch and Day Watch (apparently there's meant to be a third one?). I think I'd like to read the books since I felt like the movies could have done with more explanation and back-story.

PS - Just saw another Coraline trailer linked to in Neil Gaiman's blog. This one is definitely creepier.

You should have had, "I've never heard of it, and I'm Russian," to see if you have any really out-of-it Russians reading your LJ.

I saw the Night Watch movie, but only because my friends are bigger geeks than I am.

The ending turned me off so badly that I had no interest in seeing Day Watch (which I heard wasn't as good). However, hearing that the books are much better, maybe I'll check them out.

"Superman exists, and he's American."

I can't wait for that movie. I still haven't gotten around to reading Coraline, so I can't be disappointed by the film's relation to it. From my perspective, the movie looks pretty great.

I loved both the Night and Day Watch movies. For some reason, I thought it was a trilogy, but the end of Day Watch is a pretty clear wrap. Was there a 3rd book or something?

I haven't read Coraline, but I have noticed a definite trend in mainstream Goth kids movies - the theme that your real parents are not all that bad. Hell, in Mirror Mask the parents literally run a circus, so how cool is that? The only child's fantasy film I can think of where the boring or evil real parents do not turn out to be neat or decent is Time Bandits, and they are merely unsympathetic.

I agree that Coraline's voice seems kinda off, but as for the creepiness level, it's difficult to tell from a trailer. Sometimes trailers can be...misleading. A simple addition of a happy voiceover or creepy music can make a story look wildly different. Here are a couple of my favorite examples of this:

PS: Still excited for Watchmen. Oh yes.

At the risk of sounding heretical, I genuinely hope Coraline doesn't have an Elfman score. Danny Elfman has been coasting on the same musical gimmickry for a long time and his signature style that once amused me when I was a teenager just gets under my skin now. There needs to be a new way to approach the gothic kids movie soundtrack. Didn't Stephinn Merritt (who I have to also admit I'm kind of tired of, but nowhere near as tired as I am of Danny Elfman) do some music related to Coraline or am I hallucinating? His Gothic Archies music inspired by the Series of Unfortunate Events books is clever and doesn't sound so 1992-Tim-Burton-filmesque.
