Al Qaeda terrorist Robert Munsch* had been nefariously plotting to release a new picture book, but Scholastic, presumably in consultation with American Homeland Security, put a stop to it before an entire generation of children could be brainwashed into Islamofascism. They are also considering recalling The Paper Bag Princess out of fear that it could induce little girls to become socialist and anti-family, and grow up to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? The above is only slightly exaggerated.

My favourite line:
"Always when you are doing books for kids, you have to be sensitive to what their real world is," she said. "Especially because with Robert Munsch's books, what he's doing is taking real situations and making them ridiculous, so it's always a balance between reality and that craziness that Bob is doing. But that's what makes him so great."

*Yes, the same one who made /b/ cry with Love You Forever. But not me. It's the worst of his otherwise great books. There, I said it.

WTF

But I have to stand up for Love You Forever, although its ability to make me cry is associative rather than inherent.

I had that book when I was a kid.

I tore it up and threw it out the window.

I've never been comfortable with that level of emotional manipulation unless I'm responsible for it.

Oh Dianne. So, by extension, you should never have published Jonathan Cleaned Up, and Then He Heard a Sound, because most kids don't have subway trains open up in their apartments—in fact, subway trains and apartments are outside many kids' experience. Also, Jonathan's mom is clearly negligent, because she leaves him alone. Kids might learn that if they clean up, terrible, weird things will happen, and also that it's okay to be left alone!

Let's just not even talk about Love You Forever, and the weird messages that one sends.

Mostly I agree with you, but I don't think it's appropriate for a children's book to advocate children filling dolls with plastic explosives and shoving them up their ass.

Maybe after the Underwear Bomber story has faded from the headlines, but now is just too soon.

"Hold everything, that kid couldn't smuggle anything onto the plane, she's lucky to get onto the plane herself.' "

If this shit keeps up, it will be so very true!

I don't know if you're hip to [livejournal.com profile] ontd_political, but there were two stories posted about kids and airplanes, one of which I put up:

British Airways strange men and child policy:

And they mean business about child terrorists:

On the topic of comics,

Stephanie McMillan of Minimum Security is now selling a poster of a communist guinea pig in a swimsuit:

I thought you might enjoy that :)
