My friend Asad (he of the insightful political commentary and curry recipes), is currently writing a book about the impending fall of America as a superpower and the rise of India and China. Of course, part of the problem with burgeoning fame is that people call you and request interviews. In his case, one of those people was from Voice of America.

Dear Mr. Ismi:

My name is Aida, and I am currently working on a program on U.S. military overreach for the Voice of America radio station. Your name caught my eye while researching possible experts for this topic, and I am hoping that you may be able to address this subject.

The interview would be prerecorded, and would not last more than fifteen minutes. Excerpts would then be used within a news analysis program on the subject in question (http://www.voanews.com/english/NewsAnalysis/focus.cfm).

Please let me know at your earliest convenience if this is something you are interested in, and if so, how and when I may reach you.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Aida F. AkL
Voice of America

Asad's response:

Ms. Akl,

I cannot give you an interview because the Voice of America is a propaganda organ of the U.S. government. This government is a genocidal, terrorist institution responsible for the killing of more than 30 million people in the Third World since 1945 through wars, coups, bombings, massacres, assassinations, embargoes and economic destabilization. This horrifying record continues in Iraq today where the U.S. has killed more than 100,000 people since it invaded and destroyed the country. Examples of official U.S. war crimes and crimes against humanity follow below.

Asad Ismi

Number of People killed by U.S. Government Directly or through Proxy Forces Since 1945:

Iraq (1991-2005): 1.6 million

Vietnam: 3 million
Cambodia: 1 million
Laos: 350,000
Indonesia: 1 million
Democratic Republic of the Congo (1998-2003): 4 million
Mozambique: 1 million
Angola: 500,000
East Pakistan (now Bangladesh): 3 million
East Timor: 200,000
Guatemala: 200,000
El Salvador: 63,000
Nicaragua: 40,000
Chile: 130,000
Argentina: 30,000

Number of People Killed in Africa Due To World Bank/IMF Structural Adjustment Programs (The U.S. Government dominates the World Bank and the IMF): 21 million

Total: 37 million, 713,000 people.

Her response was something like, "Ummm, thanks, sorry, just doing my job."

Heh.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] dobrovolets linked to this amazing post by [livejournal.com profile] anarqueso about being a Russian Jew. Which more or less sums up my Ashkenazi experience, despite having grown up in a different country and all that. Cool.
