New Recipe Night was actually split into two, because
zingerella and I are never home and conscious at the same time. So last night, I cooked a new coconut curry, and today, bread pudding magically appeared in the kitchen while I was at school. I love how that works. Anyway, I'm gathering she'll post her recipe later; in the meantime, here is mine.
What you need
* 1 medium onion
* 1 (14 ounce) can light coconut milk
* 1/4 cup soy sauce, divided
* 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
* 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
* 2 teaspoons chili paste
* 1 pound firm tofu, cut into 3/4 inch cubes
* 2 tomatoes, diced
* some fresh mushrooms, chopped
* as much fresh basil as you can find, plus some dried basil
* half an eggplant, diced
* two stalks of celery, chopped
* salt to taste
* 1 1/2 teaspoons curry powder
What is this curry powder of which you speak, cracker? Here's what I used instead:
* 1 teaspoon turmeric
* 1 teaspoon garam masala
* 1 teaspoon dried ginger
* 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
What you do
1. In a large heavy skillet over medium heat, mix coconut milk, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, brown sugar, turmeric, garam masala, ginger, and chili paste. Bring to a boil.
2. Stir tofu, tomatoes, and veggies into the skillet. Cover, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix in basil. Season with salt and remaining soy sauce. Continue cooking until eggplant has an okay texture.
Totally easy, right? Right. And it came out very well, though next time I'll probably add some more chili, 'cause I like it spicy.
Then we (finally) watched 300, which was an epic sea of fail. It was like a jalapeno popper, except with a small turd instead of a jalapeno but nevertheless dipped in cheese and deep-fried in CGI.
Speaking of crusades, check out the counter-protester at Saturday's anti-war demo.

Before you and your SCA-reject buddies mount a crusade to reclaim the Holy Lands from the Mohammedan infidels...

...be sure that you know how to spell "fascism."
The best thing was how proud he was of his sign. He looked really pleased that I was taking pictures of him. Later, his friend showed up with a sign that said:
BANNED UNDER ISLAM
JEWS
RELIGIOUS CHOICE
CHRISTIANS
FREE SPEACH [sic]
It had a large crucifix taped to it.
EDIT:
zingerella has posted her recipes for Savoury Corn and Cheese Bread Pudding and Pear-Ginger-Caramel Crumble here. They were both delish.
