Dear ladies and gentlemen of a fashionable mindset,

If a gentleman is wearing black sneakers while having a stroll about town, what is the appropriate colour of sock with which to pair said sneakers?

I do not know the answer to this, being neither a gentleman nor the sort to wear sneakers.

I would say black but I am not well known for my fashion acumen.

This is a trick question!

Sneakers pretty much demand some kind of athletic sock, and so white is a fine choice. However, nothing looks dweebier than white socks in black shoes. However, AGAIN, black socks and sneakers ALSO looks kinda dweeby.

Ergo: black sneakers are a no. Unless they are some kind of canvas Converse deal, then see above re: white socks.

And if a gentleman is wearing black sneakers as a stand in for a dress shoe that is a no so big the world cannot contain it.

Black sneakers and black socks are actually fine if the pants and shirt are also black. Should the pants be black and the shirt be some light color, white socks are called for.

Ah, pants. For some reason I am picturing shorts! I feel like black socks and shorts is so bad. Even though, I can totally picture myself in black shorts, black rolled socks and black combat boots. That was HOT. But it wasn't a man in black sneakers, I'm just saying.

To me, black sneakers + black socks = part of a waiter's uniform in a casual restaurant, or other similar occupations.

Thin socks are only slightly more comfortable than too-tight fishnets.

As far as I'm concerned, comfort is the most important thing. If you're not comfortable, your clothes are wrong.

Black. Socks should match shoes -- black socks with black shoes, etc.

It is ok, too, for the socks to match the pants -- but not the shoes. Basically, the intent is that the socks NOT stand out as a seperate line/layer/item -- they should blend unobtrusively between the pants and the shoes.

Now, if it isn't a gentleman... well, all bets are off.

You could always go for checkerboard.

Depends also on the pants they're wearing. Are they all black? My usual sneakers are black with white soles and laces. If they're wearing jeans, white or gray socks should be fine.

Although I do like the checkerboard suggestion.

Best you can do is match the pants.

Trick question: Black is neutral color and can go together with any thing in my book.* Match for socks with the outfit he's wearing if he wants over +9000 fashinista points.

Or just wear whatever sock he feels like.

*But I'm biased, since half of my wardrobe is black.

Oh so interesting story, where by "interesting" I mean "completely not interesting but slightly relevant." My boyfriend dresses rather excellently, I must say. A little bit hipster but not in a tragic way. I will admit I've copied it a little. Anyway I was over at his place and about to change into black shoes and only had brown socks on me and was like "you can't really wear brown socks with black shoes, right?" and he said au contraire, that's the fashion, and then endearingly quoted Abe Simpson about onions on the belt. That's all I got.

That depends on the colour of his trousers and the shapeliness of his ankles.

red or purple.

what are sneakers and what is a hipster?

I assume sneakers are trainers, in which case they are worn for convenience and comfort so it doesn't really matter. You can buy trainer socks, which don't show, so doesn't matter.

White is a severe no-no in Britain as it is what Essex men wear and also stockbrokers in Surrey pubs. Also pointless as just show dirt.

All my socks are purply striped ones.

Also irrelevant: Marks and Spencers are doing black and red cupcake holders, which i want to get my brother for his birthday, but i am attempting to avoid Marks and Spencers because of Israel links, but don't remember what those links are...aaargh dilemna.
