It is patently unfair that I should have to know about the Miss Universe pageant, but apparently even in my lefty feminist bubble, it managed to hit my radar right now.

And yes, it's low-hanging fruit, but I'm going to laugh at the costumes.

My second-favourite is Chile:

Miss Haiti and Miss Japan managed to not dress up like earthquakes, and Miss Colombia is not dressed as a very stylish, very sexy member of the FARC, but Miss Chile totally kept it classy and dressed up like a miner.

I bet Miss Romania dressed up as, like, a vampire or something:

Wait, seriously?

But the most awful, over-the-top, offensive outfit belongs to my own Home On Native Land. Check out Miss Canada:

What the bleeding fuck, Canada? Why don't you just dress up in blackface or something? If I thought anyone watched this other than [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt I would be horribly embarrassed about my country, but fortunately I'm pretty sure pageants are irrelevant and no one watches them. Still. This is a thing in the world, and I feel gross that it even exists.

I would find this funnier were it not so close to most (white) people's attitude to actual racism/cluelessness.

Is it bad that I like the color the scheme of Miss Chile's outfit? Not into bubble hems or cowboy boots, though.

When you started describing Miss Canada, I thought, "Oh, god, is dressed as a sexy seal clubber carrying a plush baby seal?" ....and then I scrolled down, and it was worse.

Well, the miners were all saved, weren't they? So the outfit is celebratory.

I googled, and the national costumes are amazing, in a "you wore that in public?" way.

At least Miss Tanzania got to be some kind of cyborg gladiator from the glory days of NeoRome 3000.

I remember when I was a child, watching he Miss America paegents and getting confused. I understood that it was supposed to be a beauty contest, and it was to decide who the most beautiful woman was, but I didn't think the women were all that pretty. They didn't even look like real women to me.

Did Miss U.S.A. dress as accelerating capitulation to extreme conservatism? I can't think what other catastrophe we've had of late, keinahora. I don't know how you dress as a largely underwhelming hurricane.

I guess she could dress as 9/11 but that's so ten years ago.

Native Appropriations covered this. Apart from 'oh, god, she...she didn't, did she?', there are two main things:

- Plains-style feather headdress used 'to honour the Haida people' AGH. Could you not just dress as a giant salmon?

- Why not wear a dress by a Native designer who would incorporate some traditional themes in a voguish kinda way? There are some pretty examples on the blogpost linked to above.
