The Guardian interviews Tom Waits. Who, bless his soul, has this to say:

"They have removed the struggle to find anything. And therefore there is no genuine sense of discovery. Struggle is the first thing we know getting along the birth canal, out in the world. It's pretty basic. Book store owners and record store owners used to be oracles, in that way; you'd go in this dusty old place and they might point you toward something that would change your life. All that's gone."

Does he ever stray online?

"No," he says. "But then I'm one of those guys that is still a bit afraid of the telephone, its implications for conversation. I still wonder if the jukebox might be the death of live music."

He is afraid of the phone, you guys! As everyone rightly should be.

I ♥ Tom Waits so much. He plays the devil in some movie that I can't remember the name of, and is the best thing in that movie. JOHNNY DEPP is also in the movie, but my heart goes with Tom Waits as the devil. Best casting ever. Better even than Bowie as Tesla.

They do! They make ringing noises and interrupt your life and extend the working day to 24/7. I was having a meeting today that got interrupted by a client call...and it's Sunday.

To that extent, I could do without e-mails, especially of work by students needing my advice OMGRIGHTNOW because the assignment is due TOMORROW.

But then I'd have to do without LJ, and where would that leave me?

I have a phone in my study/office at home, but we never give the number out (it's not the main line but was installed back in the Dark Ages of telephone-line Internet access), so I only use it to phone out & can ignore any incoming call, nyah ha ha. People can still get me through the main line if I'm not checking my e-mail, though. :-(

I think the switch from bookstores (as Waits talks about) to online stores came at the right time for me. In my 20s and even 30s, I thrived on the serendipity; now that I'm much closer to death than to my birth,* I'm much more into pursuing specific projects, and I love being able to do directed research much more easily, get hold of rare titles I've heard of for years but never seen, and spend time reading instead of hunting for books.

* Not morbid, just realistic, and it's gotten me motivated in some good, practical ways.
