sabotabby: (furiosa)
Most days, I try not to resent people are aren't disabled or chronically ill. Today is not going to be one of those days.

100% of the push to re-open schools is being driven by people with zero lived experience of chronic illness or disability. And I'm becoming a petty shit who wants them to experience it.
sabotabby: (books!)
Just finished: Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. Yep, really enjoyed that one. Given where she ended it, I assume there are sequels? I'll have to check them out. Biracial, bisexual troubled kid versus Yale occultists, yes please!

Currently reading: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Now this is the kind of Victorian melodrama I'm 100% here for. A Mexican socialite in 1950 is summoned to a creepy house on a remote mountain by a letter from her newly married cousin, who alleges that her English husband has been poisoning her and that she's haunted by ghosts. While Noémi is headstrong and flighty, she's also incredibly smart and genre-savvy and knows the kind of story she's in.

This one's disturbing as hell. It leans hard into the premise and atmosphere of rot and decay. The characters are sharply drawn and unsettling, and the story is suffused with a growing sense of dread and terror. Loving it so far.

I was just relating to some people on Discord that my problem with Starhawk's The Fifth Sacred Thing, a book that had an embarrassingly large influence on me as a young person relative to its actual quality, is that no one in her anarchist communes ever fight over who does the dishes, and this is not realistic. By coincidence, someone on Facebook just linked to this amazing thread that had me cracking up in—well, whatever the opposite of nostalgia is.

Favourite tweet:

there are going to be people replying to these tweets with "WELL I LIVED IN ONE AND IT WAS FINE" and i would like to point out that the commune i lived in had lots of people in it who also thought ants and mold and loud music were fine or just weren't aware of them

Anyway if you've ever lived in this sort of housing arrangement or live in one now, go check it out.
