Tell me about it! Back in 1991, I was one of over 150,000 PSAC members on the picket lines, chanting "Lyin' Brian's got to go!" Which he did, a couple of years later, reducing the Conservatives to a mere 2 seats in the House of Commons. Mind you, some of his successors weren't much better.

One of my very first protests (in which I was threatened with arrest! at the age of 8!) was an anti-FTA protest.

The thing with the politicians we remember nostalgically as well-intentioned and non-partisan is that they paved the way for worse ghouls. And memory is short. No one remembers when GWB was as bad as it got.

Yup! It was at Queen's Park and the cops had decided that we weren't to cross a certain street and threatened us. I was with my mom and one of my friends (around the same age), and she asked us if we wanted to risk it, and we said yes, so she gave us each a quarter so that if anything went down, we could call the other girl's mom to rescue us.

It was fine; we didn't get arrested and I learned an important lesson about ACAB.

But, history is history. I'd quite forgotten the DAP/Standing Rock protests until today (the specifics, that is, ISTR there being a law passed allowing protestors to be run over in some US state).

It used to be less socially acceptable to decimate the economy and social safety net to enrich your buddies. Mulroney paved the way for politicians who were worse at hiding their rapaciousness.

Re: the golf course. The humiliation of destroying someone's ancestors for something as petty and unnecessary as a silly game is part of the point.

Mulroney seems like Canada's John Hewson... who won.
I can explain in greater detail, but Hewson tried to bring in a GST (he got smashed), and a few years later we got John Howard as PM.

Hewson as turned out to be a sensible voice on the centre right, and baffled at what his party as become. Maybe it would have been better in the arc of history if he had won?
