My advice is to unplug everything in the area and see if you still hear it. Some electronics make a low buzzy noise when plugged in, even when they are not on.
My hubby had this same problem and it turned out it was the printer. We just leave it unplugged now unless we need to print something.

Here at work, there's an ominous rumbling in the air ducts. I suspect some other contraption is crying for help in the engine room with the ducts acting as an echo chamber. That or it is the heating and my hearing is just getting a lot better.

I had a buzzing noise in the upstairs bathroom in my new house. I finally figured out it was a wasp (it sounded like a yellow jacket) that was on the other side of the vent. I turned the vent fan on and the buzzing went away.

How cold had the weather been? Might you have been invaded by buzzing creatures avoiding the cold?

how old is your building? if it pre-dates electricity-in-homes, all the wiring is in tubes on the outside of the walls, sorta...so it'll make a high-pitched kinda whining buzz.

it's nothing to worry about, it's just annoying.

I haven't, and probably should.

That side of the family never really speaks to me, other than sending occasional chain letters. I responded to that one in part because of my political beliefs and in part because I wanted the chain letters to fucking stop. ;)

I think I mentioned another chain letter awhile back about boycotting France from a friend of my mom—interestingly enough, some people did respond to that (there were a lot of government and social worker types on her mass e-mail list), and the debate turned out to be really good. I'll post excerpts if people are interested.

oh yea!!! i do remember the france one! i think you would dig norman finkelstein's book. i got mine out of the library, although i love him so much right now that i just want to throw dollar bills at the man.

i highly recommend it.
