1. Grab the nearest book. (N.B. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.)
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Tag 5 people.

"See, I've studied pigeons, robins, merlins, Jabber knows what else, but I've not yet seen a fucking garuda up close. So I'm going to go hunting. I've put it off, but I think the time's come. I'm going to Spatters."

I tag the five of you who haven't done this meme already. You know who you are.

I would do this meme, except I'm at work, and so there literally are no books here.

I really like the userpic you used for this post, by the way. I went and looked at that artist's website. Very cool. I'll probably make something similar for myself later.

That makes it a bit easier.

The book closest to me was "A History of Anarchism". Heheh.

Excellent. It's darn long and I'm less than half way through, as I had to have an "I'm too depressed to read anything right now" break, but I'm about to pick it back up.

Hey, depressions are made for reading, otherwise how are you going to pull yourself out of it? ;)

True. When it's really bad though, I just can't concentrate enough to read.

Are we talking published books, or proto-books?

What about curriculum documents?

I'm so confused!

Heh. Page 123 is the end of a chapter. It has no fifth sentence. Nor fourth, nor third, nor second.

I could give you page 123 from THINK LITERACY: Cross-Curricular Approaches, Grades 7–12; SUBJECT-SPECIFIC Examples, Health and Physical Education, Grades 7–9, but I'm pretty sure you'd rather I didn't.

Oh, what the hell [all punctuation and grammar sic]:

"Distribute the Student Resource, Negative Consqeuences of Substance Use and Abuse - [sic] Template (Grade 8) or Jigsaw: Instructions—Healthy Eating Jigsaw Research Project Grade 10.
Assign each student to a "home group" of 3 - 5 students.
Assign each student to an "expert group," with a focus on researching a particular segment of the task (e.g., using alcohol during pregnancy, local health depts."

oy vey!
Nothing like the academics Of education.
I have been a teacher for 18 years now and the other day I had to go to the education library at my university to take out a book. There were a few abstracts from papers hanging in the elevator and I had absolutely no idea what they were about. Guess it is a miracle I can teach at all.

This is actually supposed to be a collection of activities, written out step-by-step, in an easy-to-follow format.

Heh. Education "experts" are very strange people.

"But she changed her mind when the king did not think this right, because she had no fear that her sister would bring someone there who would defeat her champion, even if she waited a year. So King Arthur announced that the combat take place in six weeks. The younger sister then took leave of the court, prayed that God might take care of her, and rode forth to seek her champion."

I dunno. It's from Hartmann von Aue's Iwein, which I'm reading for class. It was the only book on my desk. :(

The nearest book to me is "Introduction to Econometrics". That would be scary and require Greek letters and maths and stuff.

LOL, I did it; instead of some thrilling speculative fiction (my usual fare) I am reading The Wages of Whtieness: Race and the making of the american working class. I'm reading it as homework for a study group. SO I'm kinda embarrassed aobut how geeky my meme is! LOL.

The value of whence specifies which of three file positions your offset is relative to: 0, the beginning of the file; 1, the current position in the file; or 2, the end of the file. offset may be negative for a whence of 1 or 2.

seekdir

seekdir dirhandle, pos
Set the current position for the readdir routine on dirhandle. pos must be a value returned by telldir. This function has the same caveats about possible directory compaction as the corresponding system library routine.

I *wish* I had some book around that is not intellectual. Oh to read just for fun!! Grad school in literature is synonymous with only reading for university. If I reached out my hand there would be a text of lacanian psychoanalysis, so I will just spare you and not reach out my hand.
