Who would ever invent such an awful thing?

Call waiting is horrible. It makes the phone at least 50% more annoying than it otherwise would be, and is an excellent enabler of drama, since it forces you to decide, in a split second, whether the person you're talking to or the person beeping through is a higher priority. I can think of no good reason for its existence.
I should probably cancel it, huh? Why did I even sign up for it in the first place?

Date: 2007-11-03 04:58 pm (UTC)Let me guess, now that you've banned weeknight phone calls everyone is calling you on the weekend? And the people that call you are still the 'Group B' friends that are high maintenance?
Given that you said Group B all call you on Sundays, I would recommend getting your roomie to answer the phone "Sabs, are you home? it's so and so" tomorrow and ignore the call waiting.

Date: 2007-11-03 05:50 pm (UTC)Let's say it's my mom or something, the person I'm on with won't mind holding on for a second.
Let's say it's someone I'm been waiting for and I'm *on* the phone with my mom, I can always call my mom back.
Let's say it's two people who are equally important to me, I can tell the first to hold on and the second that I'll call them back.
Let's say it's someone annoying, I ignore it.
These are all real situations which have occurred.
Win-win-win.
Without caller ID, I can see how it would be troublesome.

Date: 2007-11-04 01:49 am (UTC)whoa. these would not be people who'd even get my phone number. how self-centred!
it's not even necessarily a personal ranking. i might value the person with whom i am talking at the time a great deal more than the plumber who's about to call me back about fixing the damn leak. and they'll still get to wait a moment while i quickly talk to the plumber. when i had call waiting, that's how i used it. clients come before personal chitchat too, no matter whether i enjoy the chitchat a heck of a lot more.
my priorities are usually situational rather than personal.

Date: 2007-11-03 06:03 pm (UTC)Jerry Seinfeld once suggested (in a funnier way) that *both* parties to a phone call should have a veto on call waiting. So if you're on the phone with me and I get a beep, you get to prevent me from switching. That would be very amusing if it were technically feasible.
