Also, I finally saw Three Kings last night (it seemed appropriate, given the anniversary) because a whole bunch of people told me that it was good. It was, for about the first half. Is it me, or does it feel like they had to splice a different movie in there so that American audiences wouldn't feel that bad about themselves?

It depends whether you want it to. If one had, for example, made a vow not to eat pie for a period, then why no, hamantash would be something completely different. If on the other hand you have told people "I will make pie", but now decide that you wish to make hamantash, then why yes, hamantash is clearly a form of pie.

Changed my answer because it turns out I am familiar with it but forgot the name. (I went to a Jewish preschool but am not actually Jewish, so a great many things fall into this category for me...) It is not pie. But it is delicious.

Three Kings is one of those stealth propaganda films I like so much. It's an action adventure film that shows the consequences of violence and draws lines of responsibility. (Although, that part kinda falls away in the end fight, doesn't it?) Likewise, Real Genius is an exposé of academia's complicity in the military industrial complex cleverly disguised as a dumb college party movie. Think of these films as training wheels.

I've already said this a billion times before, but hopefully not here.

I think up until they decide to bust Marky Mark out of the bunker, it's wonderfully dark and subversive. It's as though they realized that they'd painted themselves into a corner at that point, and they could either be realistic and write an ending that almost no one would like, or go for a Hollywood ending. I still enjoyed it, but I think I'd have preferred downright nasty black comedy.

Also, by way of recent historical perspective: That was the Gulf War that most Americans thought went extraordinarily well. Hence Bush's ease in pushing for another. This film was a way of framing dissent. Even today, most Americans aren't really aware of Gulf War syndrome or the effects of Depleted Uranium. We still hear of the famously low (American) casualties but aren't told that most of those who served were crippled or killed less than a decade thereafter. Michael Moore did a bit facetiously claiming that Saddam had actually won the Gulf War.

Hamentashen are not pies. They are in a their own, special, even spiffier category (though they sortakind of resemble cookies), which, as a goy, I am seriously under-exposed to.

I like the poppy-seed ones best. Mmmmmmmmmm!




And as the years go by, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to use the phrase "as a goy" without my brain immediately trying to filk The Who's "I'm A Boy" in the background.

That movie sucked. I was NOT one of the people who told you it was good. Just that it was the poor man's substitute for that scene in Rambo 2. I saw it because someone told me it was anti-imperialist. It wasn't exactly pro Gulf 1, but still. Anti-imperialist? 'the fuck?

Make me an animated userpic of that dude pouring crude oil down Marky Mark's throat. I liked that.

I liked that scene a lot. That was the highlight of the movie for me. I think it was the first time I ever rooted for the torturer to inflict more pain on a guy. Also, that guy played Saïd in La Haine, which is one of my favourite movies ever.
