As of last night*, I completely lost all internet access at home. I'm still showing as connected to the unsecured network I've been using since we moved, with a strong signal, but no access whatsoever. And it's not picking up any of the other eight networks in the area, including [livejournal.com profile] zingerella's.

Needless to say, my situation has gone from "severely annoying" to "seriously fucking urgent panic red alert."

Please, if you have any ideas of what might be wrong, an extra AirPort that you can bring by to test out and see if that's what's causing it--anything at all--help me. I will still be checking my Yahoo address (comments from LJ go there) but contacting me by any means other than phone is obviously going to be difficult until this is fixed.

* During the last five minutes of Heroes, no less!

Ugh... I hope you've got it working!

reset button on the airport?

If we don't get the airport fixed tonight, we can run a cable, for the time being. The ethernet should work. I know it's an ugly solution, but it's better than nothing, while we figure out what's up with the wireless.

This weekend, [livejournal.com profile] captainmushroom and I will see if we can get the phone jack upstairs working, so that we can move the modem and router to the green room. That way, if we have to run a cable, it won't be quite as big a deal to do so. Also, once we do get your wireless working, you won't have to go downstairs to reset the router when it flakes out.

This is a pain, but not an insurmountable one. Why, back when I were a wee lass, there did be cables runnin' everywhere!

There are only a few reasons why that jack wouldn't be working, and it'll be easy to figure out. Hopefully the installer just didn't hook up the wires on one end. Probably easy to fix.

Probably.

Sometimes, the gods of renovation throw you a curve ball (how's that for a mixed metaphor?).

Yep. If it's not easy to fix, we call Bell and make them come and do it correctly. In the meanwhile, I can run cables from the modem downstairs to the router in the hall closet (it's not in the hall closet yet, but it can go there tonight), up the stairs and into Sabo's room.

I just need to acquire more stickums for the aforementioned cables.

When I got ADSL, only one jack in the house worked properly. I didn't know it was possible for that to happen, and neither did my ISP, so I went through a whole slew of clueless tech support staff, my case got up to management level, before I decided to try another phone jack myself anyway. Now I run phone extension cords to that jack. Hmmm, thinking about it, maybe it's time for me to move the router to the living room and spread a long network cable instead, with a hub at the other end. Hmmm hmmm.

I have found cheap long Ethernet cable at Active Surplus. 30 ft, or was it 60?

I don't trust wireless. <_<

I have a bin full of cables, at least one of which I think is a 50' ethernet cable. Several others are long cables, too. It would be nice if some of them were not the bright blue ones, but we'll manage.

It's a good fallback.

I'm not a mac guy, I'm afraid, but if you're still having this problem tomorrow, I'm willing to swing by and take a look.

could it be possible that the wireless card on your computer has just kicked it? Not a cheery proposition, I know, but it might explain why Ms Z is problem-free and you are having the troubles.

I am also no Mac expert, though.

Yeah, if your computer is a desktop and doesn't need the mobility, you should have a permanent wired solution anyway, that would make your access faster.

Oh dude, I'm sorry. I had this problem too (though I don't own a mac, alas, so can't offer you any advice). Eventually we figured out my wireless card was dodgy, so I just used some cable until I could get a new wireless card. Of course, I never did get the new card, but I like the cable: It's faster, and we only trip over it two to three times a week!

Well, I had problems getting wireless on my new laptop. It took me hours to figure out that I had physically switched off the antenna.

Oh, and I wasn't able to get [livejournal.com profile] ironed_orchid's wireless card to work at all after her last system update, which is why we now run a 10m ethernet cable between the hall and her desk.

I fail at geek. Epicly!
