sabotabby: there's no point to an apocalypse if you still have to work (pointless apocalypse)
Doug Ford's response to people objecting to martial law and no paid sick days was to go into hiding.

Then he claimed he was exposed to covid from a staffer and was self-isolating, even though he'd tested negative.

Except the timing doesn't work out. He was in hiding before the staffer's positive test, and he was tested too soon after for the results to be accurate.

Most of all, people pointed out that he himself is taking advantage of paid sick leave, a necessity that he denies to essential workers who are risking their lives and health. In fact, he is making more in one day of isolation than someone on disability makes in an entire month. And he's on his third consecutive paid sick day.

That's not even the hilarious part. What's hilarious is the reason he was out of touch: His staff needed to get him a laptop and teach him how to use it. He still uses a 2014 Blackberry for his shitposting needs, and doesn't know how to use a computer.

This is a man who lambasts the public on not being able to navigate the byzantine system(s) for booking vaccines in Ontario, who believes in forced elearning for all students, who talks about being a businessman and open for business. He's a millionaire. He doesn't know how to use a computer. He claimed it was because he was an ancient 56, so now #hes56 is trending on Twitter.

Meanwhile, there's a 22.4% positivity rate in Brampton.

This is like Rob Ford but way less funny because Rob Ford only killed, like, the one dude.

Hey kids! I love you all. And I would really like to leave some of you comments, but LJ isn't letting me. It keeps logging me out every time I try.

Anyone else having this problem? Well, I guess if you were, you wouldn't be able to tell me, would you?

I have been off the intertubes for just over a day for reasons*. Did you miss me? Did you even notice?

Anyway I returned to find LJ all different now. But I actually like the new editor. It lets you change colours without having to memorize or look up the hex code. I approve! And it has spoiler tags, which is also cute.

By the way, the above colours are a crappy hex version of the colour scheme in my basement. Which is awesome. I don't think I've ever seen an awesomer basement and it's not even complete yet.

I still hate the icon interface, though.

* I got my basement painted and now it looks all cool, but the modem and router had to be disconnected in order to do so. Pictures to come after Saturday for reasons.**

All hail [livejournal.com profile] northbard, mighty of the techno-fu, for he dared to restore our intertubes from the mists of the underworld and, after many great trials, emerged victorious. Also hail the fair [livejournal.com profile] tormenta in whose company the triumph took place.

Purses and earbuds. I find myself having to replace both this week.

My current purse has lasted nearly three years and was $25, making it the cheapest and hardiest purse I have ever owned. But the clasp broke in a way that is not obviously fixable. (I e-mailed the company just in case it is.) I've had my eye on another messenger bag for some time, so it's not the worst thing in the world, but it's irritating to have to replace purses so regularly. (And as I may have mentioned before, I'm ridiculously specific about purses, as the vast majority of them are not designed to be large enough to fit a book, waterproof, and not some sort of silly fashionable shape.)

Then my latest pair of earbuds went today. This was not such a tragedy, as they had the worst sound ever and were uncomfortable to boot, and I was itching to replace them. I am lost without my constant soundtrack, though. I dropped into a computer store and bought $5 ones so that I could get to work and back without having to hear people have loud, stupid conversations on their cellphones. These new earbuds sound much better but don't actually stay inside my ears. I've yet to find earbuds that are comfortable, durable, and perform the not-all-that complex task of transmitting music from the Ministry of Culture to my ears.

I know all about planned obsolescence and late-stage capitalism but really, this is downright inconvenient. Is it so hard to make things that don't suck?

+ Went to see Death in Venice at the COC with [livejournal.com profile] chickenfeet2003 and [livejournal.com profile] lemur_catta. It was a gorgeous production, with impressive singing. It was also very true to the novella, which means that it was curiously detached and stylized. (You are supposed to want to punch Aschenbach in the face, right?)

- Still sick. Less than I was last night, where I—this is very rare for me—passed up going for a drink afterward in favour of crashing out at home. I slept a great deal and feel better, but I still might not even need makeup to look like a zombie today.

+ Zombie Walk today! I think I am wearing the absolute worst clothing ensemble ever put together by a human being with working vision.

- My internets are being very, very flaky. If you are trying to reach me and I don't answer, be advised that it is not because I am a rude and nasty person, but because I am connecting to the outside world via two tin cans and a piece of string. To top it off, Yahoo! has decided to reroute all of my LJ-based e-mail into the spam filter, which I only discovered yesterday.

We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties, resulting in intermittent service. Political rants, pictures of cats, geekery, and general whinging will return as soon as Livejournal fixes its series of tubes.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

A bunch of you have netbooks. What do you recommend? I want to get one for my eventual travels: Light, durable, and as powerful as possible within those constraints.

We are experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of assignments and a more-fucked-than-usual internet connection. Sorry for any slow/non-existent responses and/or flakiness on my part. I guess if it's really important just keep nagging me about it.

Please oh please do not send me video links. I won't be able to watch them as my internet craps out before they can load. This is very irritating. I have to keep re-setting the connection every 30 seconds or so if I want to use the internet. Fun fact: It takes a minute of uninterrupted service to download a printer driver, but my service does not remain uninterrupted long enough to do it. This is ridiculous.

I hate how anxious and jittery technology fail makes me. I have 15 or so assignments to complete in the next month, but I haven't gotten started on any of them because I've just spent 2 1/2 hours trying to get various simple tasks that should have been managed in under 10 minutes to work. And failing. It stresses me out far more than it should.

I am blaghing from Mac the Knife.

File transfer still in progress, but so far so good. In the meantime, I'm getting used to the mechanics of a laptop and its tiny, tiny keyboard.

But anyway. New computer!

Oh, and I watched the Wolverine movie last night. I am still unclear as to what the movie version of this character's superpower is supposed to be. I think it's screaming NOOOOOO!

So all of the files successfully transferred from Old!Computer to Mackie, but now I've ended up with two separate accounts on the same machine. One has the old computer, pretty much exactly how I left it, minus iTunes working properly. It even has CS3 and Microsoft Office, which is nice, but I bought new and legal copies of those because they weren't supposed to copy over. Huh.

How does one merge two accounts on a computer, or is that even possible? It's not letting me get to all of the old files unless I log into the old account.

This is just weird. It randomly locks some files but not all of them. It's nice to know that Mackie takes my security seriously, but there has to be some way to convince it that [sabotabby's real name] and Abulafia are, in fact, the same person.

Internets totally down @ home.

Currently working on getting a new modem. Apparently no one sells modems anymore. Hope to be back online soon and not have to type crypto-mini-posts from internet cafes.

In the meantime, I'm not ignoring you. Well, I am, but not because I don't like you.

Internet now attached with two tin cans and a string. It's either the AirPort card or the AirPort antenna.

[livejournal.com profile] zingerella and her box o' cables rocks.

Confidential to [livejournal.com profile] zingerella: Watch out for the phone cord.

P.S. October Surprise = U.S. election called off altogether because of the economic crisis?

As of last night*, I completely lost all internet access at home. I'm still showing as connected to the unsecured network I've been using since we moved, with a strong signal, but no access whatsoever. And it's not picking up any of the other eight networks in the area, including [livejournal.com profile] zingerella's.

Needless to say, my situation has gone from "severely annoying" to "seriously fucking urgent panic red alert."

Please, if you have any ideas of what might be wrong, an extra AirPort that you can bring by to test out and see if that's what's causing it--anything at all--help me. I will still be checking my Yahoo address (comments from LJ go there) but contacting me by any means other than phone is obviously going to be difficult until this is fixed.

* During the last five minutes of Heroes, no less!
