The detention of the Juarez chief of police was the big story in Mexico City over the past few days, with this awesomecakes shot gracing the cover of La Jornada:

I was wondering if it was going to show up outside the Mexican news, but apparently it was on FOX, go figure.

I heard vague things about 1600 people killed in flooding in Northern Pakistan, but I wasn't really aware of the severity until I got home. [livejournal.com profile] ironed_orchid has a links round-up here.

Stephen Hawking sez: We're so screwed.

Are the courts playing stupid for political reasons, or do they honestly think that property destruction during mass demos is organized?

Jury selection for Omar Khadr's trial. I know the trial has started, but it's painful to read about it.

The intertubes informs me that Ted Stevens died. Okay, so he was corrupt as all hell, but to his credit, he coined one of the best memes ever, and his trucks will live on in the popular lexicon.

Evidently, the internet is not a big plane either.

That run away, fuck up and colonize another planet bullshit is just what Star trek nerds and spoiled wonking futurist want.

1) Change the world we got. If that doesn't work because of fools or flawed multinationals and government's than take arms. The right to a future belongs to everyone not just those who can't or won't #2 and 3....

2) Get some self fucking discipline and live right (ie: sustainably). If you have to go to work in a wagon so be it. Everyone else in the world does rich boy. Learn to grow food too while you're at it genius...you can figure out economics, SGML or C++ you can grow some fucking tomatoes.

3)Terraform...we've done it for centuries. Ancient civs knew how to make aquaducts, dams, flood plains to move water around and we can too that is if we remember how to use a shovel...or maybe not...did we all go to college/university?

This shit frustrates me to no end. Egghead Wankers. Go get your mom to do your labour/laundry for you.../rant

I do think Hawking has his tongue in his cheek on some of these things. The aliens experimenting on humans was a nice guilt trip:
“We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”
Talk about projection!

Yeah, we should admit it.

I agree! There is this planet nearby, Mars, and I suggest that we could grow food on that planet in 100 years for a fraction of the cost we're spending trying to get Osama Bin Laden. %^D

I hope in 400 years we would look back completely ignoring America versus Osama Bin Laden, but rather would marvel at the society that made an orange planet into a green and blue planet orbiting the sun with earth.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree with 1 & 2. I just think that global warming, viruses, meteor impacts, comet impacts, volcanoes, earthquakes, and calderas are all real dangers not addressable by societal changes. (re: global warming, its beyond tipping point, ime.)

Be nice to have a backup plan. Learning to steer meteors and comets from striking the earth is a requirement to avoid extinction, Hawking is quite correct. Space is the place long term - if there is to be one.

Be nice if we could get down the street without being shot too.

Go get your mom to do your labour/laundry for you

My mums dead! Explains my wardrobe!

Sorry bout your mum. I'm sure your wardrobe isn't so bad.

I think we will and need to go to space but the why matters just as much and seriously this is not the right attitude or reason.

;-) Thanks. I do believe we have to take care of our own planet first, and I agree, its easier.

I wonder what a better reason would be?

I've seen what happens when we try to colonize space. We end up sending slave ships as colonists, they end up in hyperspace WAAAAAAAAAAY longer than they're meant to and form the New Confederacy. Then an invasion by the Zerg and interaction with the Protoss happens. And Kerrigan becomes the Queen of Blades. Really, it's just pointless to even try.
