I loved how on tumblr someone posted a trigger warning and under the trigger warning stated that The Mandarin in Iron Man III is not necessarily the main villain but a front for another guy.
Is it a discussion of whether it is oppressive to put trigger warnings on a post on how Yahoo's purchase of tumblr will impact cutting and pro-ana blogs?

Hah, no. I wish. It's a discussion of whether you should trigger warn for menstruation and then whether people are being oppressed by having to post trigger warnings.
I always kinda hope Yahoo does well, partly because my primary e-mail address is still Yahoo, but also because I used to work for them and they're so adorbs.
This reminds me of one of my favourite times trolling a certain LJ community, which made use of trigger warnings at the bottom of its daily posts. A couple of us decided to have some fun with ridiculous trigger warnings, until eventually we did one with a trigger warning for transexuality which finally made the community explode and forced more stringent rules about what counted as a trigger (definitely not transexuality).
Previous to that, one with a trigger warning for mudkips got through with no major issues.

The rationale wasn't entirely ridiculous. But trigger warnings in general are stupid. Like, if I'm triggered by discussions of rape, I'm not really going to react well to an all-caps bolded "TRIGGER WARNING FOR RAPE" at the top of a post.
True. I'd guess there are a whole bunch of people for whom they don't work, however. I'd be one of them. I'm not easily triggered; I'm able to have a long discussion about cancer without freaking out, and even watch TV shows and movies that depict people dying of it. Conversely, if one started a conversation with, "I have to talk to you about something important," (code, in my universe, for "you're about to hear that someone you care about has cancer") I'm almost guaranteed to have a panic attack.
There may be more people spared anxiety from trigger warnings than given anxiety from them, but I strongly suspect that number in the latter group is not zero, either.
To me, trigger warnings, like the People's Mic, represent a triumph of form over function. I don't have the hard stats to back up that opinion and I'd be willing to change my position based on them, but as I see it now, the benefits of them are questionable and the drawbacks are underestimated.
I have an issue with foxes as saw them before people close to me died, and my dad despite my telling him this umpteen times likes to tell me when he has seen a fox by starting, "I must tell you something that happened..." AAAARRGH.
He also leaves three missed calls then texts "please call me." One time last year he left answer message AS WELL saying, "call me as soon as you get this" in a miserable tone. I assumed someone had died, decided who it must be and was rather upset. It turned out he just missed me (had only seen me the previous week).
I have also had friends simply ignore my calls for a few months because someone they knew attempted suicide and they didn't want to upset me by talking about it but it was on their minds a lot so avoided me so as not to accidentally upset me. Sigh.
I think that the best thing we can do is make others aware of our various issues and be kind around other people's. If I know someone has a trigger and finds trigger warnings useful, I put that under a cut. I don't expect folks to do that for me (I was recently told that I probably have PTSD but I don't typically freak out from reading/looking at stuff), but if they know about my "I need to talk to you" thing, I do hope that they don't start conversations like that.
i've only heard of them through you so only do them if i remember if i am crying lots in my lj in a bad state upset about stuff that i know from lj that you or usually your friends i have from here too are upset by and i don't want to extra upset friends reminding them of bad shit. but then i feel oppressed because i want sympathy but have scared off potential sympathy with trigger warnings!
