I have some of the markers of adulthood—a career, a house, a desire to stay in and drink wine and watch TV rather than partying much of the time, but the biggest markers, reproduction and conservatism, appear to have missed me altogether. So I've had the weird experience of people my age or not much older relating to me as though I'm a decade or two younger than them, and teenagers relating to me as though I'm a peer.

I told a kid the other day that I feel their age when they talk about movies, but quite old when they talk about music.

That said, wow, I was so much less mentally together in my 20s. Therapy, meds, and better quality friends have really made a difference.

I am absolutely and positively as mature as someone technically old enough to be a grandmother should be. As witnessed by my purple hair, my habit of dancing around my home office to folk metal during breaks from work, and the fact that I still read comic books and my idea of a fun weekend involves dressing up as a mad scientist and shooting zombies with a Nerf gun.

Oh god. I have literally no idea what kids listen to. I mean maybe Miley Cyrus? Or is that years ago? It's weird. I'm not even curious.

I think I feel like I'm in my early 30s and it's still possible to have a life that is less of a giant panicky reactive compromise, and then I remember that I'm not and it's not. Oh well. At least I didn't have kids. I'll always have not having had kids.

(Actually, I have kids with some decent taste in music. But the instances of kids liking a new thing that I also like are fewer and far between.)
