Hey kids! I'll be reviewing The Magicians over at terror_scifi on a probably-weekly basis, real-life depending. I was going to review it here, but it's not really a Cheatsheet of Freedom-type deal, given that the show is actually good and I want people to watch it (please watch it!), and there's just too much of it to do screenshot recaps. And it turns out they needed someone to review it, so it all worked out well.

Only read a few sentences in and decided I want to watch the show, so I'll read your reviews afterwards. HOWEVER, I never watch things before I read them if I want to read them. Should I hold off? Even if it'll take me years before I have time to read the trilogy? Or can I just watch it?

I think they're two very different things. Like, after the third episode, the TV show diverges in some pretty big ways.

I love the books and everyone should read them ASAP but I don't think it will ruin your enjoyment in any way by watching the show first. There are cool Easter Eggs in the show if you've read the books (like the author appearing in the second episode) but think of it as more loosely inspired than a faithful adaptation.

I'm not always convinced by the choices the show makes, but I love how it's so different that I'm no longer watching to see how well it adapts the books, but to just find out what happens next.

I'd love to get some adaptation discussion going on in there too! Because while I agree with the big change, some of the other changes irk me. And where is Josh?

Right? Josh is fairly minor in book one, but important in the other books. Maybe one of the hedge witches will take his place? I got caught up on Sunday, and I'm happy with developments in Kady's story... but I think the latest episode is probably out about now.

I squeed out loud when Kady turned out to be [Spoiler]. This is going to make the thing that happens far weightier and more narratively justified, imo.

I was sort of hoping Todd would turn out to be Josh, except not really, because Josh should be fat. I'll just be sad if the fucking an elf line doesn't make it in somewhere.

Yeah. While I'm glad there are non-white characters, I don't want them to erase all the fat characters.

Even though I love the casting, everyone is way too attractive except for Margot, who is the correct amount of attractive.

I'm looking forward to your reviews. I'm caught up, but my memory of book one is spotty, so I've been unclear on when and whether the series has changed the book's story. I have a few ideas on things that might have changed, but short of getting time to re-read I don't know how to confirm. Maybe your reviews will jog my memory.

Hopefully! It's been awhile since I read the books, and I'm trying not to do too much book comparison, but I'd welcome all the book discussion.
