Reading Wednesday
Jun. 12th, 2019 06:58 pm OH HEY IT WEDNESDAY
Just finished: The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle. This is a delightful Lovecraft pastiche of Lovecraft's The Horror At Red Hook from the POV of a young Black musician/con artist, and it is just immensely satisfying while still being disturbing af. Really, it's 75 pages long so anything I say about it is going to be spoilery, but if you enjoy Lovecraftian horror but despise Lovecraft's racism, go ahead and pick it up. It'll take you all of an hour.
Currently reading: Glass Beads by Dawn Dumont. I didn't realize that the last book I read was only 75 pages long so I found myself still awake and casting about for something to read. The library was featuring this one for Indigenous History Month as part of its One eRead Canada campaign, which makes a book available immediately for a month. It's a collection of interconnected short stories about four Indigenous kids. It's also very short so I'm about halfway through it, and it's an engaging read with vivid characters. It's also surprisingly funny, with these glimpses into student activist life and dating that, while I am in no way Indigenous, nevertheless felt highly relatable.
