It certainly is, and it's one that's conditioned by the prevailing ideology; the left is most hateful and most dangerous, because what it wants is most different than how things already are; the right is always in cahoots with how things are, essentially just is a version of how things already are with stronger flavors, so it always appears as the more reasonable of what from Ideology's point of view are the wrong options. So the left always goes to the wall first.
It's why I'm really leery of these calls for corporate sites to 'ban the nazis,' because they can't, they absolutely can't, focus on just one "side", even though it's the difference between fascism and socialism. They have to do both sides, and will always focus harder on the left. Antifa are a hate group now, officially, and will be policed much, much much harder than the right ever will. The right will be protected, perceived as a non-transformative minority position, while the left is always the real threat to the status quo. The cops guard the right and go in with truncheons on the counterprotesting left, etc. Same dynamic on these online services, only the cops are underpaid outsourced workers in the global proletariat, mechanically applying a formula.
Also Tumblr is a piece of shit. It's just an absolute piece of shit.
I am down with calls for Twitter, FB, etc. to ban Nazis not because I think it would be effective or enforced, but because it is sometimes a useful rallying point. But to get all Marxist, we need to seize the means of social media production or it will never work in our favour. (DW is not run by Marxists to my knowledge, but it is run by community-minded people, and this is why this place is not a garbage site.)
Funny, I had back-burnered Tumblr because I'd gotten locked out of my account—and all the techs are volunteers, meaning they heave a deep sigh whenever you contact them—I did find it was a time-suck to be on it, but not to the extent that FB is—plus, I often learn something from hanging out there.
Now, I think I might as well just abandon my account, though
I do 'cause I keep getting notifications from them, despite not having visited my account in years and forgetting what the account is called (probably sabotabby as well???) and what the password is.
Yeah, it's always, ALWAYS the leftists and the queers and the women and so on who get banned and closed down and books burned even. That always happens first.
I feel like Tumblr is deliberately attacking the people who helped grow the site. Tumblr has become so synonymous with being a place where women and queers and other lefty types can express themselves that words like "tumblrite" and "tumblrina" are used as insults against us. I think grimjim was right up above, maybe the volunteer teams are full of people who don't want us to have a space online.
I basically left Tumblr when they censored and hid my blog over a whole bunch of fucking b&w art photos/drawings, and I wanted access to it again, so I deleted them and felt angry and cowardly. And it had nothing to do with politics even! Gahhh.
They didn't like my cakes or squid. I still pop in daily to see if there's anything particularly cool but like...the cake was not a dick pic. It was, admittedly, a cake-fail where the castle spires looked like dicks, but it was very clearly supposed to be a castle cake for a child's birthday party and Tumblr decided it was porn.
I haven't joined up re: Tumblr and Twitter (although I've bookmarked some of the actors and astronomers and CBC-affiliated accounts on the latter service). Facebook, I got invited into by a past partner in comic book-making. And I'm on Flickr as "dwight_ew", if you can stand my occasional bouts of flag-waving there.
The networking option is there, built into the comments function as well as the groups' discussion forums, although it doesn't seem like a lot of people take advantage of those options. A lot of us seem to just upload and move on.
It's a UX nightmare as well. I don't think anyone can use it properly, and I always found it weird that it was such an important dissemination point for Antifa International.
