schools don't drive infection

Schools and childcare centres recorded 614 cases of COVID-19 today. That's 26.3% of all provincial cases for today (March 30, 2021).

In honour of this fact, I'd like to share a poem I wrote with y'all. It's not a very good poem and neither is our situation.

It's Okay
Schools are safe
and if they're not safe
that's okay
because kids don't get covid
and if they do
that's okay
because it's not that serious
and they don't spread it
and if it's serious
and if they spread it
that's okay
because they got it from the teacher
and if there's a lot of cases
that's okay
because we changed the definition of outbreak
keep moving the goalposts
and it will always be okay





While the rest of the developed world is getting vaccinated, Ontario is building more field hospitals, and a secret memo that got leaked informs us that the situation is fine, since they have the capacity to handle all the death and illness that is about to be unleashed by the deliberate political decision to let the virus run rampant.

I'm so sorry. The only thing that has been good here in Texas is the work that the (Democratic) mayors of the large cities have done to keep us safe.

I don't know how your government and mine are fucking this up so badly. Wtf? There actual poor countries that are doing a much better job.

I don't know, we've got fewer people (we're only like 10 million in the whole country) and a very large percentage falls under the "risk groups" that get priority due to being old. That might be one of the reasons why we've also had more deaths (that and the fact that our health care system is increasingly broken).

I'm not trying to compare who's got it worse, though. I think that in terms of how it actually affects me and most people I know, I'd say it's about the same, sadly. Where I think there might be a bigger difference is in the long run, in terms of whether the economy will bounce back or not.

I've been completely unable to understand the current school reopening rush and that's even given my household's presently very fucked situation wrt teenagers.

School is important for mental health and also for babysitting the children of low-wage essential workers with no sick days. Given that nothing has been done to support student mental health, it's 100% about the latter.

There is nothing I can say about the horror of Ontario's handling of this that you don't know far more keenly than I do. But I am staggered, over and over again.

I forgot to say that I just don't understand how stupid many parents seem to be. You'd think "hundreds of our kids are sick because schools aren't safe" would make them pissed off enough to demand a different situation. I just don't get it. How is the sheer rage of concerned parents not toppling these politicians?

I would think they'd be pissed, especially because we don't know the long-term effects of covid in kids. But a lot of parents just seem to have realized they don't like their kids so much.
