Is it sundown yet? I haven't looked forward to Yom Kippur this much in years.

Why?

I don't understand all these holidays.

You are going to to the feast part, afterwards, right?

If you don't I'm coming over to make latkes, and bringing the peanut oil with me, young lady.

Having to chew up the cinnamon in order to sprinkle it on stuff is just a bit much, eh?

Not eating? Then what are the latkes for? Sounds kinda' Ramadamish.

Forgive my ignorance. I only went to my first seder about two years ago.

It is, in a way. But you can eat. I normally function on two meals like that anyhow.

Of course I had a Muslim student from Ethiopia once who did not eat breakfast during Ramadan (her choice, nothing mandated about it, she could have gotten up early enough). She could not function all day at school.

Latkes are for Chanukah.

They aren't a traditional break the fast food.

Yes, I know they're the wrong kind of food, but they're yummy and I know how to make them, and in my family we have lasagne for Christmas, too.

Oh I wasn't saying it was forbidden to eat them, I was explaining that they weren't traditional to someone who didn't know about Yom Kippur.

I really don't care about Christmas, so long as it stays out of my way ;).

so is mine. In fact my life may be even sadder considering that I'll probably get a paid account now simply because of the fact that you've made me jealous.
But palindromes make me happy.

Christain babies are crunchy. Very high in calories though.

my parents and my friend Nat (she was with me at the bookfair in Montreal) play volleyball in a jewish community centre in Ottawa and they've got a few weeks where they can't play because of holidays that we aren't familliar with because we're all raised christian. I guess it's a good thing that they played yesterday otherwise they might not have been able to get a game in tonight or tomorrow.

I honestly had no idea what Yom Kippur was all about and decided to look it up. I thought of fasting as some kind of one-person cultural experience, but I don't have that much will power and lunch is usually the highlight of my day.

I had the neatest experience on Yom Kippur evening. I've never really been to a synagogue on Yom Kippur (maybe when I was very little? actually, I probably have, but can't remember). Anyway, there's this tiny orthodox mostly-Moroccan synagogue two minutes walk from where I live, and my landlady wanted me to come with her. It was actually really beautiful, the singing of the prayers. It reminded me of a combination of gospel music (cause of the way people broke out and tried to outdo each other w/ their voices, maybe), tajweed, the call to prayer in Egypt and Palestine, and the way Egyptian friends would chant Baha'i prayers. It was just gorgeous. I'm considering going more often just to learn how to sing like them.

Atonement? If you have done anything to atone for, you certainly haven't mentioned it here.
