Reading Wednesday
Aug. 31st, 2022 04:23 pm So stressed out that I almost forgot about doing a book post.
Just finished: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Yes, predictably I loved this. It's got Gothic ambience, mad science, anti-capitalism, a Mayan uprising, and cat people. The dance of power between the innocent but stubborn Carlota and the damaged and brooding Montgomery is an absolute joy.
Currently reading: Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is a dystopian fairy tale about the hazards of remote learning. Okay probably not but. A select group of children are genetically engineered for their intellectual ability and tutored by distant teachers, so they're able to buy solar-powered Artificial Friends to provide them with socialization. Klara, a not-quite-cutting edge AF, is chosen by an ailing child, Josie, to be her companion. Klara is observant but has little exposure to the world around her. It's rather heartbreaking to watch a slow-motion family tragedy from the point of view of a being that barely understands illness and death and certainly doesn't get the fraught social dynamics of the people in Josie's orbit. Really good so far.

I enjoyed Sandman, mostly the second half. I've got your other comment, and I intend to respond more fully there.
