College Republicans at the University of Michigan really know how to have a good time. They've been planning events including "Fun with Guns Day" and "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day.*"
"Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" would involve volunteers posing as illegal immigrants and hiding on campus while students try to find them for prizes. For the "Fun with Guns" activity, students would shoot cardboard cutouts of Democratic leaders with BB or paintball guns.
Okay, okay, the last bit does sound a bit fun.
(Hat tip: [livejournal.com profile] wlach.)

Unfortunately, it looks like these events won't go ahead as planned. But maybe they can take heart in knowing that some students still like to kick it Columbine-style. (Or should I say College Republican-style?)

* Speaking of catching illegal immigrants, the Minutemen just keep getting better and better.

I'm sure certain guns in Gaza make some days more fun than they'd otherwise be.

Oh, those silly Republicans. They're just so stupid. I'd probably find it cute if they weren't in charge of this entire freaking country!

Yeah, the timing isn't great. But then, it's not like this is the first time something like that has happened. You'd think a college organization would be smart enough not to pull something like this!

The only good thing about that Dawson College shooting--and it is a very small thing compared death and injury--is that it knocked out any credibility remaining to Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine. The thesis that such calamities could never happen in Canada because y'all just have so much more of a caring, whole society is now shown to be bullshit.

Let me know as soon as you hear about that song getting a reference in print. It is so going into the book.

Crap. Well, I'll look at the bright side: I hate shoe-horning new material in. I don't hate it, actually - I just know that I shouldn't because it keeps me off unfinished chapters. Recent additions to Chapter 1 include Ann Coulter calling the 9-11 widows "witches" and "harpies" who are "enjoying" their husband's deaths and Katherine Harris saying the Separation of Church and State is a "lie" because "God chooses our leaders."

Yeah, I know: I thought that was her job too.

It's important to instill civic virtues such as being vigilant about the Illegal Menace, so they'll grow up to be solid citizens, don't you think?

You win for linking the Fight Against the Illegal Menace to the War on Terror. You are well on your way to be a senior fellow at the American Heritage Institute.

This gives me an idea for a game that would gauge the Republican tendency of the players based on the logical fallacies people make. The more errors you make, you move in ranks from a Bible College to all the way to Supreme Court. Hehe.

That's something. I think there is a lot of paranoia to go around for everything, and it's good to know that every policy point on the Rep. agenda boils down to "longer lines." I wish that were literally true, because maybe they would then put more money to my local post office, where I waited on line for almost an hour recently just to mail a stupid package. Arrrgh.

Wow, not suprising that scumbag Alan Keyes is elbow deep into that Minuteman scandle. That guy is just trouble no matter where he goes, not to mention being a bigot who threw his lesbian daughter out on the street.

A friend of mine gets The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Report and has been passing along her old issues to me. They have been covering the Minute Men along with the rest of the Militia Movement and it seems these guys are always scamming their membership and that's what they usually get nabbed for - sort of like Al Capone getting nabbed for not paying income taxes.

I wonder about the Intelligence Report, though. They seem almost more pro-cop than anti-racist. In the time I have been getting issues, 4 NYC police officers emptied their 11-round clips into an unarmed black man and 2 Louisville police officers emptied their 11-round clips into an unarmed black men. Yet there is nary a word about racial profiling, racist cops, police brutality, killer cops, etc. in the Intelligence Report. Yet, a single approving mention of Earth First on a Nazi discussion board merits an article on "eco-terrorism"? I thought their beat was supposed to be racist hate groups. The "Law Enforcement Training" item on the sidebar explains a great deal.

On a snark note, in the paper format, the editor has an emo photo of himself looking down. It makes me either grimace or giggle.

They are great at covering the Klan, Ayran Nations, etc., but police misconduct is completely off their radar - which is not a little curious considering historic Klan / cop collaboration in the Old South. Even more curious considering their excellent article on Nazi infiltration of the armed forces in the current issue.

WHOA. My Alma Mater writing an article about the school to which I'm confined right now. I wonder how come I didn't hear about it. Oh yeah, I've been avoiding The Michigan Daily ever since I saw "LIBERAL PROFS NOT WELCOME IN IRAN" on the front page the second day I was here. It's bad journalism at its worst (and my Alma Mater's newspaper is supposed to be better, but I still hate it for the most part, think of how crappy other college newspapers are!)

I'm not surprised: there's a fraternity/sorority called Kappa Kappa Gamma, my ignorance of the Greek alphabet made me think it was Kappa Kappa Kappa, which would have been the white supremacist fraternity/sorority. Alas, it was KKG. But most of the Kappas (as we affectionately call them) seem like stupid bandwagon white supremacists anyway.

And they wonder why I smirk at people who wear shirts that say "Harvard: the Michigan of the East"!

Erm, I don't suppose they're going to have working class uprising day at this school by any chance, are they??? :/

Get to shoot college republicans with actual weapons! :)

ps. May I use your al-Awda poster, in modified form for a t-shirt? I'm thinking of kaffiyeh silhouette on the right hand side with palestinian flag colours, and "We Shall Return" on the left hand side in block letters. I haven't figured out the back yet.

When I eventually get to it (still looking for decent high-res photos of kaffiyehs waving in the wind, but if I can't, I'll resort to drawing it out by hand), I will post photos first, so you can see what it looks like. And then, you can tell me what size you wear.

I would have been very surprised to see that go ahead at U of M. The school is in Ann Arbor, which is about as liberal as you can get outside of Berkeley.
