As seen around:

Doomsday Clock pushed two minutes closer to midnight.

Doomsday Clock? Why didn't anyone tell me that there was a Doomsday Clock?* Also, why don't I have a Doomsday Clock, like, in my room? A little one beside the bed. That would be wicked.

In all seriousness, kids, the end of the world isn't cool.

* Okay, so [livejournal.com profile] frandroid has an icon of it, but I never bothered to investigate what it was. I'm lazy that way.

You're right, the end of the world is not cool, but this story became kind of cool when "Two Minutes to Midnight" by Iron Maiden popped into my head while reading it...

see, if you got your politics from punk you'd know it.

The Clash referenced it in "The Call Up"

It's up to you not to hear the call-up
you must not act the way you were brought up
Who gives you work an' why should you do it?
Fifty five minutes past eleven

It's up to you not to hear the call-up
It's up to you not to hear the call-up
Don't wanna die!
Don't wanna die!

oh, for the days we were only at 55 minutes past 11!

*sigh* You kids today, you don't know how good you have it. I remember when the clock was at 11:59.

I've never understood the point of this crap. Everyone's been making such a big deal out of this. Like it actually means something. Like some asshole with an oversized novelty version of a retail shopkeeper's lunch break sign is some sort of profound international institution that has to be respected and listened to. IT'S JUST A BUNCH OF UPPITY SCIENTISTS WITH TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS. IT DOESN'T MEAN A FUCK DAMN THING. Just the other day I was watching TV, as I am wont to do, and there was like a whole hour-long show on the History Channel about this clock. I'd seen it on before too. Like, how do you fill up an hour describing this? It's not a real clock. It doesn't even represent anything resembling real time. It is meaningless. It means nothing. There isn't even like some sort of algorithm behind it or anything. It's just like, a big fucking minute hand. So what? What does that prove? I don't get it. I've never gotten it. It makes no sense to me. No sense at all.

right, but the reasoning now is almost scarier than the 'innocent' days of the cold war.

It happened to me too!

Yeah, exactly! The Doomsday Clock was front page news during the Reagan defense buildup, whenever they moved it one notch closer to midnight. Always the doomsday clock.

Only two minutes? pfft. Screw these scientists, I'll make my own Doomsday Clock. With hookers and black jack. eh, forget the clock.

At this point I just keep my fingers crossed that the world won't end before Futurama is back on TV next year.
